WrongPlanet Pageview Count hits a Profound All-Time Low due to lack of adequate autism representation

According to direct (actual, not estimated) measurements from Quantcast, WrongPlanet, which claims to be the largest forum online for people with Autism and Asperger’s syndrome and their relatives, has hit an all-time low count of website pageviews, as measured from January 2008.

A pageview doesn’t represent a unique user, but rather an instance where an online user visits a website, so a single user can have several pageviews. This is despite the fact that WrongPlanet’s membership has dramatically increased from 2008 to 2012. Additionally, from the same statistics on a different tab, the unique visitor count has also declined by 50%. This is most likely because more and more users are feeling alienated from the site and its goals, and do not feel represented.

At one time, WrongPlanet’s footer stated that “Asperger’s is not a disease” (Wrong Planet - Autism Community accessed April 26, 2015). Many members presumably joined the website on that basis; however, there is no proof that Asperger’s is always or even beneficial. The statement has since been removed. Additionally, the left-hand sidebar at the top on the archive page showed statistics concerning the total user count and daily user growth; that sidebar has also been removed.

One sub-forum on WrongPlanet is The Haven, which is supposed to offer advice to members struggling with personal issues. Many members there report feeling hopeless, lost, or even suicidal. However, it is rarely suggested on there that neurodiversity might be problematic.

The biggest problem is that only a small recurring group of people with Asperger’s gets presented on the front page (Wrong Planet - Autism Community accessed April 26., 2015). This group includes Alex Plank, who is WrongPlanet’s founder, John Robison, the designer of several famous guitars and owner of a renowned auto shop, and Jack Robison, John Robison’s son.

The frontpage group is generally in favour of neurodiversity, and the vast majority have achieved professional success. They do not represent many other autistics that struggle with basic needs, have no professional success, and/or would like a cure. In fact, a thread called “The unpopular WP members club” , which started in 2012, claims that WrongPlanet has become a popularity contest like everywhere else. It spans over 300 pages with more than 4,600 posts and is still active today.

WrongPlanet also once ran a web series called Autism Talk TV . The series featured Alex Plank, Jack Robison, and Kristen Lindsmith, Jack’s girlfriend. Again, only a limited number of autistics were featured. The series was partially funded by Autism Speaks, which many WrongPlanet members considered to be controversial. There hasn’t been an update in two years, and the WrongPlanet Youtube channel hasn’t been updated in over a year.

Because there is scant evidence that Autism/Asperger’s leads to special talents, many less-functioning members have abandoned the site in frustration, and the higher-functioning members have lost interest over time, as it doesn’t affect their lives much.

*To view the data on Quantcast, select “all” under “Date Range”, “Month” to the right of “per”, and “Global” under “More Options”. The two tabs used are Page Views and Uniques.

Editor’s Note: Opinions expressed by Autism Daily Newscast Contributors are their own.

This article was originally submitted to us on April 27th and subsequently published on WrongPlanet.net . We think that the questions raised by Yuval Lenental are worth exploring. One of the Forum Moderators responded to the post as follows:

“I think you’re trying to apply a narrative to the data without justification.
I would attribute the decline in WrongPlanet’s userbase to three factors:
1) Frustration with technical issues
2) Inadequate moderation
3) A well-documented general trend away from specialised forums and towards social networking, microblogging, and Reddit.”

Founder Alex Plank also had this to say,

alex-plank-300x169.jpg

“Pageviews in general have gone down across the Internet. The problem with using quantcast is that it requires people to use javascript to be counted so anyone with a JS block or adblock will not show up. In reality the traffic has not declined significantly when you look at the server’s analytics.”

One final note, the author refers to John Robison as the designer of several famous guitars and owner of a renowned auto shop. John Elder Robison is a well known author and spokesperson for neurodiveristy. Robinson resigned his post as a member of the Science and Treatment boards for Autism Speaks. His reasons can be read here.

We welcome your thoughts on this topic, “Is WrongPlanet.net still a viable resource for those on the autism spectrum?

I hope I don't start any controversy, or inadvertently start a p*ssing contest between AspiesCentral and the other site, but honestly I just up and left that site. The environment was toxic and riddled with social injustice warriors. Real parasites, the bunch of them. Just my honest experience. It was fun for a while, but it really lost its charm.

I signed up on WP about 6 months ago to check it out, since all I heard was "WP is a toxic place". Thus far I can't really confirm it. Perhaps if I would be a regular for years, I'd notice it, much like you'll notice a change in climate on any forum. Even Aspiescentral has changed over years.

Just my experience. Perhaps I was being hyperbolic, as I sometimes am. But honestly, I just got fed up with what I noticed on the board and decided to, let's just say, "graduate" up to AspiesCentral. :grinning:

I left because there was so much hatred on there and anger and bitterness. As a NT I want to learn from people on the Spectrum rather than just relying on what NT "experts" have to say about autistics. But, type NT into the search bar and you'll find a number of horrible threads. I can understand people venting their frustrations, but some of things people were typing were just vile, such as "NTs are all worthless and should be sent to the front lines of wars and work in factories", "NTs are primitive and partially evolved". There were some threads who asked members not to be so hateful, but really the moderators should have been more involved.
Those members making such comments were in a minority of their own, but reading posts like that was still hurtful and upsetting. At least it gave me the helpful experience of knowing what prejudice feels like, being hated and generalized just because of my neurology. I'm glad I left.

^ People like that, I find, give us aspies a bad name. They're just as bad as the normie scum who think autistics should be wiped out. Same thing, really.

Point to be extracted from all this? Don't generalize.

I was active on WP forums for a few months, but once I found AC, I haven't returned. Can't say why, I just feel more comfortable here and get so much more from the exchange of ideas and experiences.

I love the positivity and humor here.
I appreciate that those who struggle are understood and supported here.
I delight in how we cherish our NT population here.
I love AC. Just sayin'. :)

I 'found' AC & joined because we have an autistic nephew & I wanted to do some reading & learning about Aspergers. I then stayed & keep staying because .... I not only learn & discover something new every single day - not just about autism but also about people, human nature, & even myself - & because I just like (well, really love!) & enjoy the community & the members here so much. Separately I had to stop participating in some game threads because they became a tad too addicting, but I still check them out for a smile or out loud laugh because some members' sense of humor is PRICELESS!! :D

PS - I don't normally participate on any kind of internet forum. I feel AC is a very special place. I have personally never encountered such non-judgmental, wonderful, kind & caring people anywhere else in my life. Yep, I just love it here too. :)

First time I ever heard of Wrong Planet was people coming here fleeing trolls. You're not supposed to judge a book by it's cover, but I do. I judge a site by its name. "Wrong planet" just didn't put off a good vibe. I don't trust any site with a negative word in the title like "wrong". Whether it subconsciously rubs off on people or they purposely choose it to represent how grumpy they are, those kinds of sites tend to be not-so-nice places to be.

I visited Wrong Planet several times, but I just couldn't get comfortable. There seemed to be a fair amount of aggressive disrespect shown and explicitly voiced...I don't remember how I found this site, but after exploring for a few weeks I signed in. It's been an eye-opening and a very helpful aid in coming to terms with all things aspergian, and a haven. I am grateful every day that this site exists.

I have never been on WP and reading the posts in this thread I'm glad I found AC first.

Like you, A4H, I'm thrilled to be here.

My thoughts: WP needs better data analysis. I've been thinking for a month now about how this site is put together, because it seems to work well. Examined in the context of the article, these thoughts surfaced....
  • The human brain is wired to create narrative from data (What Makes Your Brain Happy, DiSalvo), so the initial supposition by the respondent is inappropriately dismissive. When people measure stuff, they want to know what the numbers mean, not just what they are. Everyone creates a narrative. Generally, self-interested narratives are the least relied upon, so it's good to get second opinions.

  • Of three reasons offered by a moderator for lower page views, two of them are technically part of site administration--and either fixable or manageable. Publish the platform requirements or constraints, and add moderators. This gets hard if:
    • Moderation is a paid position, or
    • There just aren't enough people interested in submitting to the occasional disagreement for the sake of setting a distinct "voice" for the brand--and maintaining a consistent user experience. Consistency is linked to longevity for the brand, and also to how long users stay. The joint efforts of moderators are what give a site its voice and personality. It matters how they're trained and who they are.

  • Pageviews can't be down across the Internet when major social network platforms are recording increases. "In 2014, the website [Reddit] received 71.25 billion pageviews, an increase from 56 billion pageviews in the previous year..." according to Statistica. Similar results for Twitter and Facebook.

  • Microblogging only competes if you're sending quick updates to an audience that includes people who either hang on your every word (you're a celebrity) or have people enjoy hearing how you are (you inspire wit, or you have friends or customers). A community forms for the first and forms around participants of the second. How does a site that enables a twitter-like function fail to compete at this category?

  • In a gorgeous category distribution chart for the top 100 websites in the UK, search engines/portal communities came in first place, dwarfing other categories. The argument that says there's a trend away from specialized forums doesn't fit this data.
I don't understand what data is missing that causes the WP numbers in the article to be interpreted as other than an indication of how the site's priorities are experienced by its users. Ie: the site supports a certain point of view and rewards it, and a certain communication style, and rewards that. Don't like it? Leave it.

Anyone else get something different?

I was a regular on WP for about 2 1/2 years. I spent nearly all my time responding to threads posted in The Haven, which was a sub-forum specifically for sharing problems. There were always aspects, things that were tolerated on the site as a whole I did not like or agree with, but for a long time a dedicated mod group kept the questionable stuff more or less contained to certain areas, and I did not know of any other active autistic forum.

Last fall the remaining 3 core mods quit in a group after 2 years of no support/help from the owner, who was absent most of that time. They were unable to make changes, fix bugs or even ban people in some cases. After their departure the long promised forum upgrade was implemented but with many problems and bugs that continue five months later. Features that people liked were removed and ones they didn't want implemented. The membership wasn't consulted. The Mods were asked for their input, but apparently the owner never read their responses.

Its really the founders one-man show over there, with his material and face plastered over everything. I think he keeps it mainly as a temple to himself honestly, and as a credential. It did help him get a spot on the Presidents Autism Advisory Council along with Autism Speaks. If he didn't need it for Cred, I think he would have dumped it long ago.

The current Mod group is a decent bunch as well. The mods have never been the problem.

Hi,
Been a member here for a while and haven't posted anything yet but I wanted to respond to this. The site still has a very high amount of traffic. I don't know why the quantcast numbers are lower but it could be related to our caching and people blocking javascript. Cloudflare statistics show that we get about 25,000 unique visitors per day (which is obviously significantly higher than these quantcast estimates which are not reflective of our actual numbers.

There were some major bugs before the migration and almost all of them are fixed now aside from some minor things that I'm still working on so I apologize to those of you who are also members at WP and had some issues in the past. If you still are having trouble please let me know.

As far as WP being a "temple" for me personally, that's pretty ridiculous to say and also hurts me that people would say that about a project I have dedicated over 10 years of my life to as a resource to help those of us on the spectrum.

Pharoahs worked on their own temples all their lives sometimes, so 10 years is nothing.

But yes criticism hurts. Was it you who deleted the Admin, Tallyman's explanation why he was leaving? Having practically your entire active mod group quit (because of you) should have told you something. It apparently didn't. Others (not me) opened threads on your vanity and how your flaunting of success made some feel. That should have told you something too.

I see this going nowhere but south, so please understand if I have nothing more to say to you.

Thread getting inappropriate at this point. An apology is an apology or it's not. Crossing territory to make a stink and then go back isn't an apology. If people are members of this site and another site [which happens all the time, all over the internet, frequently] it would be way more suitable to make any such apology to such group at the appropriate site.

I don't go to another school and make an announcement specifically directed to students who also attend my school.

If there are issues with the numbers, that should be directed at the author of the article.
There is an entire internet on which to start an argument and express personal distress regarding criticisms of a site which has been a project for many years. I can actually greatly relate to that. However, choosing to make a first post an argument is probably a poor choice and not a great way to make an impression about where priorities are.

Don't start an argument or encourage a rivalry on this site. Please.
People in leadership positions are in a place to guide away from such things.
