Y2K: 25 Years Later – My Journey Through 2000

Wow, it's hard to believe it’s been 25 years since the year 2000. Time flies, right? I’ve been reflecting on that year, and it was a really good one for me, especially when it came to diving into the world of anime. So, here’s a little trip down memory lane:

First off, I got into Sailor Moon that year. Now, I had heard of anime before, but what really sealed the deal for me was a Sonic the Hedgehog comic that parodied Sailor Moon. Sounds weird, right? But honestly, that’s what pulled me in, and from then on, I was hooked on anime. It’s been a lifelong fandom ever since!

Beyond that, 2000 was full of great TV. I was watching reruns of Seinfeld (I mean, who doesn’t love a good Jerry moment?), Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, and America’s Funniest Home Videos. Classic stuff! I also made it a point to watch Japanese news, which was an interesting way to stay connected to the other side of the world.

That summer, I went on a trip to New York and visited relatives in Virginia. I even managed to watch some baseball along the way, but I’m still upset that the Mariners didn’t beat the Yankees in the 2000 ALCS to meet the Mets. Talk about a missed opportunity!

Looking back, 2000 was a year of major shifts—both in pop culture and personally. It marked the start of my solid connection to the anime fandom, and it laid the foundation for what would become a lifelong passion. It’s crazy how much has changed since then, but in many ways, it feels like it was just yesterday. Time really does fly.

What were your standout moments of 2000? Any anime that got you hooked or memories you look back on fondly?

Not into anime.

I turned 10 in 2000, and it was probably one of the best years of my life. I had no worries and just lived day by day. I had a huge imagination, lots of toys, a loving family, lots of cousins to play with, and I even had friends at school back then and wasn't bullied. Such a great time.

Unfortunately the millennium bug happened in some way, because the world hasn't been the same since 2000, due to technology overadvancing.

I had my first IRL friends but they were all fake and they all abandoned me by 2004 then I became a hermit for 15 years until 2019 until I started to socialize again now 5 1/2 again I lost many fake friends again last in IRL but gained new ones I trust now as far as I can throw them.

Read my post history from the start but first take a few aspirin it will make you drowsy with ups then downs then some great stuff then major misery in spring 2024 year they will make you manic depressed.

Hah, Sailor Moon is awesome. I'm not much of an anime fan but I've been meaning to go back and watch some of those VHS rips on Archive (not the reboot, blegh!).

I'm not really sure why Pokemon, Sailor Moon and Cowboy Bebop didn't somehow turn me into a rabid anime fan, but those shows were really something special. If anyone's got some recommendations I'd check them out, too!

Year 2000, eh...

I graduated high school that year, which meant that a decade or so of constant torment was over. Constant POINTLESS torment, specifically. Graduating seems like it should feel like an accomplishment, but in reality I only learned a couple of things in all those years at school. Reading, writing, the simplest of math (barely) and how to type. That... that's it. Everything else I know, I learned despite school (and outside of it), not because of it. I also learned that people are terrible and are to be avoided. I still remember the dumb graduation ceremony like it was yesterday. I only had one friend, I still know him to this day.

Also that year I was accepted into Stupid Mistake University- I mean, college. A "business college" (this should have been a red flag) located somewhat nearby. The goal was to get a degree in computer science and later use that to get a career in game design. Thankfully this did not work out. Though I do have the degree (which is useless, but I guess I get to say I have one). College would not become the nightmare that school had been (it was extremely formal and everyone was expected to act like professionals, and also I didnt have to directly deal with other students), but of course it would produce it's own issues (not the least of which is that I didnt learn anything there either).

My childhood dog also passed away at the start of that year. I dont think I ever really quite recovered from that.

Anime I was already into.

The ones that kicked it off for me originally:

Iria: Zeiram the Animation (the first I found, and still my favorite to this day)
Armitage III
Outlaw Star (this is the one with the spaceships that grapple and punch each other, obviously a necessary watch)
Slayers Try
R.O.D the TV (aka Read or Die)

I dont watch nearly as much anime these days, it's gotten very... homogenous? I get bored of most modern series pretty fast. But I used to watch a ton of it back then. I think I've seen Slayers all the way through like 30 times and it's a pretty long series.
