EdR , thank you, what are your general interests?

Professionally, I am a Metallurgical Engineer who has morphed into a manufacturing plant manager when the American steel industry all but evaporated.

Personally, I am an avid reader and gamer, a history student, ersatz philosopher and a dabbler in gardening, both vegetables and floral. I am also one of those handy people who can fix or make most things.

Like you I am a solitary man; content, actually happy, alone.

It just occurred to me that almost everyone frequently complains that they get bored and I usually reply that I don't get ever get bored (outside of business meetings and seminars :D). I am convinced that is a direct result of my Aspergers and the comfort I have being alone.

EdR, thanks for that, I'll address the last first.
I have never been bored. I figured that between the time I learns to read and going to 'Nam I read 5k to 7k books. No one gave a damn. Then as now.
Have a wife who I adore and acts as the diplomat that smoothes out my wrinkles. OK
In about 1962, I was flipping through a Popular Science/ Mechs. type mag. and an article called something like "the blackest black". As I remember, a metallurgist treated nickel with nitric acid vapor. The result, as I remember in the photomicrograph was a canyon like, steeply spired covered surface. To me it always seemed that light could enter and never leave. If that was the case then there would be an energy transfer, nicht wahr? My interest, my question is in the efficiency of this or how to set up this experiment at home. EP

I like the pic with the puzzle piece a lot!

Rocco, thanks I like the jigsaw piece one a lot. I will play with the symbols as I go along. I have already posted to someone when addressing you. Oh well.
There is another block that has strange letters in it, B I U O T A, what are they, please?

My main interests at the moment are mythology, science, and anything outdoors.

Omega, thanks. I may share some interests. Any particular mythological type or era. Any particular "ology". These days I am all about comfort and refining vices, single malt being a personal favorite esp. Islay isle scotch. But once upon the time I did some general prospecting, gold, fossils and specimens. Metal detecting also. I would go tomorrow if I had AC and a decent bed.

When I read that you mentioned your wife I was a little embarrassed. Typical Aspie of me to omit mentioning that I have a wife, an ex, three children and a 6 year old grandson. That merely demonstrates that I am solitary, even in a crowd.

You impressed the hell out of me by correctly calling the picture a photomicrograph.

Even I cannot replicate polishing that Ni sample at home. At minimum, you require a wet polishing wheel (several are better), a variety of sand papers down to 600 grit, and diamond polishing pastes, (all of which can be purchased), a fume hood and a metallurgical microscope (they work upside down to use the polished surface as the focal reference). Learning how to polish a sample to the quality necessary is time consuming, but not inherently difficult. As to your question about an energy transfer experiment, I am not sure what you are asking?

EdR thanks for your time. I polished gemstones for a living and am intimate with mirror polish to 100000 grit, microns. Solitary work, AC jazz music and my work not under the NT scrutiny. Made a living of it. The thing that I was getting at was not polishing, I can polish a nickel to mirror. I have nitric acid but don't know how to vaporize. Follow me here, old memory- old mind an old article. The nickel is placed in an sealed environment, vaporized nitric acid is introduced, the vapor attacks, etches the nickel. As the nickel pits and flows down, dilutes and is replaced by flowing down the ridges more canyons and spires are formed. This structure acts as a light trap and may passively collect energy without moving parts. If so the rest of the design is in my head. Whew, did I clarify anything?

I can follow that explanation, but the effect you describe is totally outside my experiences so I can"t be of any help. Other than to offer this advice: Don't do this at home. Nitric acid vapor is lethal.

EdR, oh I know, I make aqua regia to dissolve gold once or twice a year, also other applications in my business or general prospecting.
I have tried several times to track this issue down, so far, nada. I figured it was worth a shot.
I was thinking that if light gets trapped, then the energy can be collected, stored, transferred. Think that spinny thingy with the light bulb shaped enclosure. A radiometer that spins in light. I think that it's a tool to demonstrate light energy.
I like irises, lilies dabble with hybridization of the iris. Grafting rose buds on stock roses. Growing asparagus, squash, many kinds of peppers, cantaloupe, watermelon this year as well as herbs and 'matoes. Planted a butterfly garden, and am currently tilling the entire back yard in the attempt of seeding it with 2 lbs of mixed wild flower seeds. If it does not kill me first. Thanks again, later. EP

Harrison, thanks. I am having a difficult time with this site. I am not sure what I am doing, these symbols folks award me with, are they like pats on the back? I feel like I am out of my depth and doing this incorrectly. I don't have enough info about this site to frame my question properly. It is a learning curve thing, but if I am screwing this up and displaying too much ignorance, too much chat room bungling and ineptitude my inclination is to cut and run. For example there is a block with many computer symbols in it. What is this?

Don't worry too much about the symbols, they are more of a courtesy than a necessity. They are a type of 'shorthand' that let's us acknowledge a post without writing (if we choose).

The bottom right of the box shows the symbols you can choose, hover your cursor over each and they show a tex of what they represent.

You're not screwing it up that I can see, just relax and enjoy :)

Progster, thanks. I am enjoying this site. More reasoned than the other one I tried. Here, I am swimming in a brightly lit sea of sanity. Other venues not so much.

Hi EP. My greatest interests are repeat and geometric patterns, packaging materials, The Bible, friendship bracelets, plants and wildlife.

Vinca, my greatest interest is being generally interesting and communicating with other people that are interested in the acquisition of knowledge. In general I prefer a respectful loyal opponent to an person that agrees with me, at the level of friendly discourse, because it compels me to research and think.
I collect things, a list that is very long, I read anything. I take classes at " worldscienceU. cosmology both relativity and quantum mechs. I cut stones. Fond of history, science, great minds and exploration. It a big universe for my small mind to play in, EP

What are your greatest interests? :)

V, I find that interesting, especially the patterns thing. Years ago I researched the geometrics of Islamic art, mosaics and a weird type of writing the read the same forwards/ backwards and upside down. I would have to downstairs to the library to find the book, nevertheless led it is very interesting. Hope we can " talk" later, I must go now,
May the farce be with you? EP
