A-Z Places

Kellogg - Wabasha County, Minnesota, USA

Long Beach, Washington State

@Forest Cat I was across the bay from this place just yesterday. In the city of Astoria, Oregon.

The towns dotting this region of the Oregon and Washington coast were founded by sailors of Norweigian, Danish, Scandinavian, and Finnish Heritage. Most of the residents to this day are ethnically from your part of the world. One look in the phone book, and nearly all the surnames will attest to this.

They still cling to the sea for their livelihoods, and expert craftsmanship is an important part of their culture.

The inlet to the Columbia River is deadly. Although the bay is very deep, it is riddled with constantly shifting sandbars, and changing riptides. There are also sometimes 70 knot winds, and 30 foot swells. It is cold and stormy there at least 300 days of the year.

It is illegal for any ship- cargo, cruise ship, etc, no matter the size, to navigate the inlet to the Columbia. A local pilot will board the ship and cross "Cape Disappointment" and navigate the bar known as "The Graveyard of the Pacific". These brave local river pilots, mostly of Nordic descent, are the one ones with the ability to do so.
