Are you too old for anime or cartoons?

I know sometimes society trys to tell you anime and cartoons are only for kids but that is incorrect. Im 38 and still watch anime and cartoons and not ashamed of it. First off there are adult cartoons not for kids like south park and Beavis and butthead, also adult anime innaproprate for kids and pornographic known as hentai and also anime so dark and gory with lots of guts and entrails all over the place it would give children nightmares, so no your never too old, plus the artists are adults as well.

Screw what society says; we only get the one life, so best to live it how we want - and if what we want is to watch cartoons or anime then so be it. :)
I'm still watching anime and cartoons nowadays along with old TV shows for kids/adults, etc. and I say as long as you're getting enjoyment out of it and it's not bothering anyone else, go ahead and enjoy it. :D

Personally I went off anime. I enjoyed some films as a teenager. Nowadays I find it too loud both audibly and visually. It's too over the top for my tastes these days.

The same goes for cartoons in general. I may occasionally watch an episode of South Park. Whilst I find it amusing - there's very little desire to watch any cartoons. In my late teens and early 20's I used to watch a lot of cartoon comedy shows religiously.

I suppose tastes change.

My grandmother still likes old Popeye and Betty Boop cartoons so I see no problem continuing to enjoy anime. I am more of a manga reader these days but still enjoy anime when I get the chance to watch. I also still find Beavis and Butthead as well as King of the Hill side tearing funny.

A lot of anime is *not* made for kids. They're just as violent and gory and full of adult situations as R-rated Hollywood live action movies. Maybe even more so. And there are cultural differences, in Japan nudity is really not a big deal.

It's mostly in western society that people generally see animation as only for children, and it's just plain stupid. Cartoons have been a huge part of my life and that doesn't have to change just because I'm older.

I was going to mention the fact that adults make the animations. Due to that I don't get how people think all animation is just for kids. Who's going to spend years practicing and studying to make cartoons that they don't even like and aren't proud of?

Also, I love cartoons. I still watch a lot of the ones from my childhood, and even watch new ones for kids. Some of them have very good, detailed plots, especially the ones for adolescents instead of younger kids.

Depends on the animated feature. Some like "Futurama" were clearly never intended for children.

Sometimes I wonder the same about some of the classic cartoons like all the Warner Bros. "Looney Tune" characters. Funny as hell, though as a kid I didn't always understand the humor as much as when I got older.

The more I think about it, I suspect those who created some of the best animated features long ago probably felt that their craft was intended for everyone.

Anyone up for an episode of Jonny Quest? Very nostalgic stuff to me. In 1964 I had to go over to my friend's house to see it in color...lol.

Exactly! The naysayers don’t get that at all! On a similar note, who designs video games as well as build toys? Adults!

I thought Jurassic World Camp Cretaceous was going to be kiddie but it’s actually not. The cutesy character designs bely the premise of the show and I found it enjoyable. I keep forgetting that there is a second season now.

I will be, when I am like Mel.

I think depth can be found in any human creation, even if it wasn't originally intended. But I think there are obvious layers to a lot of cartoons, many of which were intended by their creators. I plan to watch animation, read comics, and play with toys until I die.

I like old and dramatic anime the most or psychological type. I don't really share anything about my interests to anyone so it's all the same to me.

The only anime/cartoon I care for is Sailor Moon, which I’ve loved since childhood. Other than that, it (other cartoons) really doesn’t interest me. I love history and spend most of my free time reading and watching things about the time periods that interest me.

I've never really understood this idea- people are too old for art, story and expression? It's weird. Even for the cartoons explicitly aimed at children, there's important messages, nostalgic memories, and visual stimulation. How can we ever outgrow that? Of course people don't have to be interested, but I honestly don't know why people feel the need to shame others for getting joy, inspiration or comfort from things that are harmless.

The reason why people say that, is because they themselves dont understand it, and they dont want to feel like they're just clueless old derps. So the solution is that they shame others into feeling bad about being into X thing so that they themselves do not have to feel bad.

The thing that is a special level of pathetic is that they dont HAVE to be clueless old derps, if they'd just, you know, stay open to trying new things. But nope, better SIT ON THAT COUCH AND DO NOTHING, I mean someone's gotta do it, right? Dont got time to understand things, let's just make everyone else hate on those that do understand those things.

Ridiculous.

Ignore anyone that says anything like that. I usually just laugh at them and go back to whatever I was doing. Except I'll do it louder.

Even the old Looney Tunes cartoons actually have a lot of adult jokes to them that just aren't caught by the younger audiences.

You're never too old.

At the library I work at, a disgruntled parent returned a DVD box set of Dragon Ball with a note that said “This cartoon has genitalia in it. Not proper!” and I died laughing. They also made the silly claim that “adults don’t watch cartoons.” which made them look even more stupid.

The silly co-worker who baselessly assumed I should’ve shot up a school also thought Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon were American cartoons and had no idea what anime actually was. She didn’t even know it was a medium. Then again, this is someone who admits that she doesn’t read and only uses her computer for social media (She asks me questions like “What’s cirrhosis of the liver?” when she could easily do a Google search and get results.) so I shouldn’t really be surprised.
