ASD-themed jewelry/accessories

I am sorry, but I live in an area with almost no community for autistic adults (I don't know anyone else like me IRL in my area). How does one find our what symbols are linked to ASD and why?

Why are infinity symbols and rainbows linked to autism? I though rainbows were already taken by gay pride? Who decides these things?

Sorry if these questions are silly.

I don't know of any autistic community near me either. (Actually, my area seems very intolerant of autism or any other difference, based on my church and workplace experiences.) I learned everything I know about this through the Internet. This article may be helpful: Autism rights movement - Wikipedia

Edit: Ooooookay, you guys are fast.

That's pretty funny. Thanks - I needed a good laugh.

It's weird, but, apart from this site, I've never been around others I knew for sure were like me. I sometimes wonder what it would be like - would being around people like me make me more social? Or would we all just innately know when we wanted to be left alone? Would it be easier or harder? I can't imagine it, but I'd like to think it would at least be fun.

On the other hand, I think a lot of my success has been born from not having that kind of support or understanding growing up. I had two options all my life: (1) learn to blend in/go along to get along; or (2) give up/throw in the towel and go ... nowhere.

Now, though, I'd at least like to not be the last to know about rainbow infinity symbols, etc.

The infinity symbol is because its hopeful instead of the offensive jigsaw puzzle piece the rainbow for neurodiversity

I read the puzzle piece is offensive because it implies we need to be solved. However, couldn't it also just mean we need to be understood? I mean, we are a mystery/puzzle to NT's. I guess it's just hard for me to get worked up over the symbolism.

They definitely are.

I thought it just meant we fit into a different place than the other pieces. More of the idea that we are all in fact different.

(The most standard of NT's getting the side pieces imo.)

Yeah, that makes more sense on the puzzle logo. As to the rainbows, it seems like we could have our own thing. If I wear a rainbow where I live, then I guarantee you no one with think ASD, but some dude might offer to buy me dinner. While free dinner's not bad, it's the point that the rainbow thing becomes sort of ambiguous.

For sure, I would just feel like an ass trying to decorate myself in rainbows. They have a whole section at Spencer's I always eyeball because I do rather like rainbows but I've known some gay people before that would just NOT be happy about me being decorated in them as myself not being gay. (Though I bet I've been with more chicks than some lesbians, lmao, but I've been with guys too so that kills it right there.)

No one wants to see me in rainbows. Yeah I think the gays would be upset if we persist in co-opting their iconography, and rightly so. They were there first. Surely we can find something original... sigh.

Wouldn't that just make you bi? (hoping that's not an offensive question.)

I don't really consider myself bi because even though I like having fun with girls I could never see myself in an actual relationship with one. Maybe they just call that bi-curious? Not quite sure.

I've heard it said sexuality is a spectrum. If that is true, then maybe you're "slightly left of bi" if left is the straight end and right is the gay end:

Straight<--------------(You?)--------------Bi----------------------------------------->Gay

I'm completely straight, but if my wife ever leaves me (God forbid - she's like my favorite normal), then I think I will try asexual for a bit. Relationships are too much work. Not sure where asexual fits on the spectrum theory of sexuality though. I'm not even sure the theory is sound, but it would help folks self-identify on dating sites:

"Hi, I am Jon Doe, and I am slightly left of bi looking for a gal anywhere in the straight to bi range..."

See what I mean? Could solve so many awkward match.com dates.

Well, as I said in the original post of this thread, there's the whole "light it up gold" instead of blue, and that's because the symbol for gold is Au. So if we don't want to use rainbow to symbolize autism we could use gold.

Actually rainbows were biblical first !!!!a sign in the sky to say ha shem(G~d) WOULDNT flood the earth again or make it rain to flood the earth ,then gay organisations took it

As a Christian I agree, but most people still associate the rainbow with the LGBT community. So we're just trying not to send the wrong message with our accessories.

I like the Puzzle thing better than the infinity loop... I fail to see any connection between us and the infinity loop even if it looks cool??? maybe I missed the story on that one?
I am a pattern savant of sorts so Puzzles I like immensely!:D
I like white, or sky blue, trimmed with gold, for heaven!:)
Puzzle piece stills smacks of the (life is so unfair i can't think about myself 24 hours a day and we must find a cure for the terrible disease autism so that i can continue to think about myself)Autism speaks

Oh! I ignore them I already likely figured Out the autism source it isn't curable in my opinion.
And I like my autism savant whatever stuff!
I just like puzzle shapes as they appeal to my image savant stuff...you can like the other if you wish it is nice too!
Maybe we should use a Spooky Cats eye :catface:Ha! ha!
NT's like Dogs more! ...
Aspies like quiet cats! ...:p
Its not totally the image its that it reminds me of their selfish attitude and how dangerous selfish can be
