Welcome Benjie. I'm 42 and also still at the self-diagnosed stage. Only came to the conclusion about a month ago in fact after talking to a friend of mine with a masters in counseling psychology who was diagnosed late in life. I have always struggled with alcoholism self medicating my woes. While in rehab my friend suggested I may be on the spectrum. Wasn't the first time someone had said that to me but the first time I didn't just brush it off. Did several self assessments she sent me and every one of them indicated beyond a doubt that I was on the spectrum.

Been researching night and day ever since and it makes my life suddenly make so much sense. I'd always known I was different and didn't fit in but could never figure out why. I always figured it was because I was smarter than most, but it didn't explain why my other smart friends didn't have the same social/emotional problems and hang ups I did, or why I always felt more comfortable talking with neurodivergent folks. Now that "why" has been answered and I feel like an enormous burden has been taken off my shoulders. So I keep researching more and more and each day feel like I'm making breakthroughs with myself and that I can now start to finally thrive and not just live alcohol free.
