Autistic Family

I am self-diagnosed. A brother is diagnosed, but I don't know the level. One of the problems that I've had in talking to my many siblings about autism is that they'll say about a symptom, "But we all have that!" It's likely that some of them, as well as one of my parents, has some autistic traits, if not the actual condition.

@Lisa 123, two Aspies won't necessarily have an easier time making conversation, because we don't all share the same interests. For example, I'd be very bored by your physics talk.

That's part of the fad about being on the spectrum, every body's a bit autistic, they see some of us having what they perceive as super powers, want that, do not see the down side. I chased promotion for over my career changed positions, upgraded education, that part nobody else sees the frustration.

I absolutely agree we can get bored by each other's interests. My youngest just switches off when I talk about physics as does my husband. All the boys find my daughters chat about classical music mind numbing. I am lucky because I love learning. I enjoy listening to how my husband is rebuilding an engine, my daughter has discovered jazz, my youngest has found a new technique for drawing and my oldest has learned all about planting bulbs to grow in the Spring. On my own I would never know any of this because I just get lost in my favourite subjects. Without them I would just watch documentaries and Lord of the Rings. But because of them I get to learn lots of new stuff which I really enjoy. I know they feel more like you do and rather stick to their own stuff. It's all good.

My favorite physics Blog is not even wrong, by Peter Woit. I watch a lot of u-tube videos on science. Talking sports not my thing. I am looking forth to my step grand son and grand daughter coming over to lectures I Have on math and science some of the threads on here you can see pics. My stepgrandson's eyes lite up when he saw my library in a spare bed room I Told him once you learn to read. My sons are not on the spectrum. When it comes to their kids we complement each other.
That's very much how my husband and I work. We are very different in the way we see the world and what our interests are but we compliment each other very well as parents. Between us we cover a lot. I will defintely check out that physics blog. Thank you.

You will enjoy the blog all the major players use it to converse. Peter is currently pissed with current politics in his home country. Lots of old threads. I Have a thread on this forum on physics so you are not alone. Physics appears to run in my genetics some thing else I'm investigating.

I had a chance to read some of the posts on one of your physics threads and it was brilliant. A lot of it was over my head but I am enough of a physics fan to be able to enjoy the chat. I checked out the blog you mentioned and poor Peter really is unhappy with the way things have gone. I had a chance to listen to him a few times on You Tube and it's a pleasure to listen to him.

If you want fun saw that Peter just called out Sabine keep in mind Peter is a mathematician, Sabine is a physicist
watch the comments as some of the best in both fields pick sides, fireworks start. Sabine is one of us. keep in mind my background in math is high school, My gift is being able to visualize it, not do it with formal proofs Michael Faraday had a similar gift.

Thank you. It's my first time on a forum. I am hoping to find some positive stories out there. People who are struggling like us all but somehow managing to enjoy the ride.

Hi and Welcome,
There are definately some positive stories here. The day in and out business of the threads however tends towards the problems people face. It can bring you down after a while. I find pacing and being selective an important aspect of maintaining a good balance. There may also be a tendency for folks who have enjoyed some success not to talk about it overly much as we don't want to make others that are struggling feel worse. But many of us do negotiate life more or less satisfactorily or even quite pleased with ourselves :D It's tricky but the purpose is to try and help others get to that point too, but limited to printed words.

Most of what Peter said in that post is beyond my understanding. I have enjoyed listening to Sabine for years, she is great fun. When these people disagree with each other it provides great entertainment for us mere mortals.

That's really helpful thank you. I have had to face a lot of my own battles so hopefully my experiences might benefit someone else. I know my kids will have their own challenges so I am hoping to learn from others so that I am in better position to help my kids going forward. I don't have much experience being part of a group so I appreciate your message.

Peter is a math guy I understand a bit could work through it, which is Sabines point I believe in Occam's razor. no matter how involved the math. You may want to check out Nieil Turok.
