I don't think that's actually the case for most Americans. The American media, on the other hand, likes to live on fear, yes.
And people actually listen to the media.
There isn't a day goes by where I don't see, talk to, or hear about someone's fear being used to justify all manner of things. Most americans may not live in fear, no, but a lot do, and it's those people who get all the attention, it's those people who spread more fear and promote violence in the name of that fear. And because we live in a broken country facing terror threats, they actually get away with it, that behavior is promoted, just like arresting a kid over a clock, or scribbles on a notebook, is promoted. All in the name of that fear.
