Disappointing people

Tonight is rubbish night, and it’s not uncommon to see someone fishing through people’s recycle bins looking for bottles and cans. This afternoon was a little different, a couple of middle class looking old ladies. I felt sorry for them, they must find it embarrassing, so I took the few empty cans that I had out to them.

Then they spoke to me. They’re sick of seeing Asian people collecting cans and so their church group organised to go out and collect as many cans as they can so the Asian people can’t have them.

If I see that poor old Korean man come past I’m going to give him $50.

Wow, that would've shocked and disappointed me too! Sometimes it's a surprise who happens to be an asshole in your neighborhood... I have learned the hard way with a lot of my neighbors...

I'm sure the old Korean man will appreciate your kind gesture. Thank you for being a truly good human being. The world is a better place with you in it.

It'd be interesting to know what these women's children and grandchildren think about Asians, as I fear this sort of prejudice is often passed down.

This sort of behaviour can just be stuck on the pile with the rest of the racist, prejudice and murderous undertakings all done in the "name of God".

Of course, there's plenty of pious and good-tempered people out there, of all races, creeds and denominations. I think these older women would be buttheads regardless of what religion they followed. But it does seem odd that the church specifically told them to attempt to deny Asians access to the empty cans.

I am a sucker for anything Korean, since it is my obsession for some year's now and even see you type that word, had a strange excited effect on me lol

It seems those two old ladies have coldness in their hearts!

Hate racism. We are all human beings; no matter our colour, culture race etc

It seemed odd to me too, but half an hour later I saw 5 of them walking together looking for more bins.

I see it as incredibly antisocial and antiAustralian. But some mothers do 'ave 'em.

You're probably right, but those old ladies make me so angry. They are part of so much that is wrong with our world.

I translated you reply and I'm confused by this mentality.

"Never give away money, give away food, clothes, useful items (carts, bicycles).

Many of these unfortunates have gambling and alcohol addictions, giving them money would only p*** them even more."

Giving things to charity and those less fortunate is a noble undertaking. Most people accumulate a lot of things they dont really need. Would you rather people took them to a dump to be buried in a hole in the ground with other landfill?

People with addictions are people trying to soothe pain and trauma. They are struggling, and need help. Whilst some might use what'd given to them to feed their habit, I can guarantee that every addict has thoughts and desires to move away from unhealthy habits.

Saying no to charity and giving isn't a humane way to be.

I think the translation doesn't come out as intended. I believe he is saying don't give money, give useful items instead.

(I'm used to talking to people from many different countries and running in to these translation problems)

Ahh ok that makes more sense. I misread it I guess.

My bad.

Wow, unbelievable how mean-spirited some people can be.

I'm having a clear-out and decided to give away some scrap metal to some Roma guys. There's quite a lot of it and it's worth a day's wages for sure if they sell it to the scrapyard.

I have a roll of copper sheet, really heavy, weighs about 50kg. He wanted to take that, but I said no - that's valuable, I'm not giving it away, I want to sell that. Ditto some really heavy iron chains. He then tried to tell me that they were old and worthless, but he would give me five euros. I said no, I'll look up the price of scrap copper online and make you an offer. Turns out that copper is worth 5.70 Euro/kg and the roll is worth 275 euros. And he wanted to tell me it was only worth a fiver!

Some people really disappoint me in how they deal with their fellow people. Good on you for planning to give the man 50 $ next time to beat the old ladies out.=D

Those two women seem hateful that they act based on race. That their religious leaders promoted what they are doing is most un-christian. They are acting like sheeple, refusing to think about the ethics of their actions because it is blessed by a so-called moral authority. Such is the reason I am non religious. Having dealt with dissaproval in my life I will not tolerate racial animosity, especially from the religious. Plus, as I have worked and traveled in Asia there is much we can learn from those societies.

It takes religion to foster hatred of others. I once counter picketed a group from Westborough Baptist Church who are rabidly degenerate as they picket funerals of vets to protest against the LGBTQ community.

Who of us have lacked acceptance of who we are? It was a great joy when I finally felt accepted that I feel it is a basic human need that all of us as humans should be afforded. Not to do so is denying our society their viewpoints and positive values.

When I was homeless in Adelaide I used to hang out at the central bus station, it was airconditioned and I could charge my laptop up and it was quiet, I could sit there and read all day. I also got to talk to all sorts of different people.

One evening a lady tried to offer me money when she found out I was homeless and I told her I didn't need it. She got a little insistent believing she was doing the right thing. And then I explained it to her.

We got hot coffee and hot showers in the morning - free.
Our laundry got done for us - free.
We got fed 3 meals a day - free.
We got full health cover - free.
And the government was giving us $50 a day - free.

We weren't the ones that needed financial help, it's the people that don't have citizenship that really need the support.
