I'm a bit cynical about the whole thing really, IMO Valantine's Day was created by card shops to sell schmaltzy cards between Christmas and Easter.

Although my ex from school did "Pop the question" to me on Valentine's Day 1991, we were too young to get hitched though, we were both 14 (nearly 15) at the time, legal age to get wed in UK is 16.

Believe in it how? As in celebrate it, go out to dinner. buy chocolate?

If so yes and no. We buy cards, maybe chocolate. Nothing too extravagant. I had a close relative die on valentines day some years ago, so it's kinda bittersweet.

I believe it's another good excuse for people to connect and express the importance of their significant other. Some want to do it and others don't, but overall I think it's a good thing, and if some working stiffs are going to make a little money off of it that's not so bad either.

No. I find the whole thing kitschy, over-hyped, commercialised and false. One shouldn't need a special day to remember to appreciate another person.

No, it is all based on paganism and as a lover of my Creator, I keep away from things that offend Him.

When I did not know my Creator and in my teen years, it was more to do with: who likes me and lol no one liked me, because the one time I did get a card, it ended up being a joke by some girls. I was mortified.

Ironically, I was dating my husband and not only did I get a card from him, but a brief encounter with a guy, got me a card and teddy bear from him, with the words: I am sorry it did not work out; but if you ever change your mind....!

I was actually dating someone else, but it was all very complicated and met this guy, who was really lovely, but had to tell him that my heart was with my boyfriend and then, things went really bad in my life and met my now husband and voila.

I became a christian before my husband and said to him that he knows the reason why I won't celebrate, so i would really appreciate it if he didn't give me a card and he did, because he said he loves me and wanted to show me, but sadly, I was not complimented at all.

I am not a romantic person.

No... If you love someone they should know it to the deepest part of their being, and no commercial trickery would ever satisfy that... I'm with Progster.

Lol, paganism? Valentine's Day is a Christian holiday that is based on a Catholic saint's feast day, St. Valentine, who was a 3rd century martyr that came to be associated with courtly love in the middle ages.

A wealthy Roman Christian named Valentinus was martyred and buried near Rome, he was included in Eusebius of Caesarea's accounts of martyrs and thus immortalized for Christendom along with quite a few others, because this particular Eusebius also wrote the most widely studied and ergo most important general history of the Church from the first four centuries.

Most of Christendom was Roman Catholic for quite some time, and people in the middle ages slapped all kinds of stories and themes onto random martyrs, of whom all they really could know was the sole fact that they were martyrs. So presto you have this guy become associated with the weird social rules for people having feelings for each other at the ruler's court, eventually that theme gets fantasized further by the conception of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and now here we are with a St. Valentine who just has to do with couples in general.

So... pretty much the same as lots of other Catholic holidays, like St. Patrick's Day and the story about the snakes.

I'm giving chocolates to my wife on Valentine's Day because I like to please her. Why would I snub her on this day of great expectation?

I've always thought that Valentine's Day is a giant waste of time, it is a holiday that just reminds a lot of people that they are alone.

Why dedicate one day to showing your significant other that you love and care for them anyway? It should be a constant thing.

Ye, I'm horrible to my boyfriend 364 days a year, but on Valentine's Day I get him an overpriced gift to show him I do care!

On a serious note: no, I don't "do" Valentine's. I make romantic gestures when I feel like it, not because it's a certain day of the year. Also, my form of romance usually involves buying my boyfriend some form of food and/or toy. Or a Kinder egg, which is really best of both worlds.

I have mixed feelings about it.

I have never enjoyed the pressure of holidays like Valentine's Day, nor the sense that people are obligated to get each other things just because it is a certain day (like is it any less special if a person does all the Valentine's Day type things on a random day instead?)....and I find the marketing around Valentine's Day distasteful.

But, I am all for finding opportunities to express love (romantic or platonic or whatever) for others.

Well, I certainly believe that a dude who came to be known as Saint Valentine did, indeed, live sometime during the third century, but I don't "believe" in Valentine's Day in the same way I do Easter or Christmas, no.

Still, I think it's some good fun to have an extra special excuse to gift my fiancee with some chocolate, cards, and other things that she might not need, but will still enjoy nonetheless. I also don't think the vast majority of people only garnish their significant others with love, adoration, and gifts on Valentine's Day; that's more what the commercialized idea makes it out to be.

Additionally, I dig the Valentine's Day memes, so that's always a plus!

Hmmm...well, I did kinda like the decorations on some of the doors at the hospital. I might buy my boyfriend some new nail clippers or a can of chili beans, have to do something nice once in awhile:rolleyes:.

YES! I believe in that little dude, Cupid, I believe in him! He's out of control! Someone should get a license to throw arrows like that! This kid, he thinks he's Daryl Dixon killing zombies! Someone control the little guy please!

Dark chocolate will always make me happy, flowers, and a romantic message, will always make me happy.
Crowded places and restaurants, because everybody gets out on the same night, will never make me happy, so I would gladly change that day for another one (a nice restaurant, without having to wait, with good service, and not too many people, that will make me happy).

I took out the girl I liked last year, this year I decided not to bother with her since its gone nowhere and I am sick of wasting my money doing stupid crap like that.
She knows how I feel, least I got the nads to tell her awhile back, proud of myself for that.

I like all the special holidays. Even if I don't have a Valentine it's fun to see people get their presents and walk around with bears and stuff.
