Does your country have a variation of a “dollar store?”

I totally forgot about Five Below lol
They're kind of a step above dollar stores not just in terms of price, but quality as well.
I have electronics from Five Below that are several years old and they still work.
I had a customer come through the lane I was bagging in on one of my shifts (I told her I liked her shirt and wanted to know where she purchased it). She was wearing a t shirt from Five Below and told me the store is worth checking out. A YouTuber I watch tried out art supplies from the same store and they’re actually pretty good.

Here there are plenty of discount stores like Lidl or Chinese stores (run by Chinese people who import from China, mainly clothes.) Some stores sell items really cheaply. No chain stores or franchises, though.

Not much around my area. It's a sleepy region that's mostly farms, so... yeah. There's not like, piles of stores absolutely everywhere. I know of one Dollar Store, though I've never been in it myself (I'm not out that way all that often).

The real trouble around here though isnt so much anything to do with price in terms of products (most places sell a super wide range of things, so you can go cheap or you can go pricey within the same store... generally big supermarkets like the Meijer), but instead the problem is that from most locations in the area, you've got a good bit of driving to do to get to any of the stores. A problem during winter, I tell ya.

Also, off topic. Just wondering how people can be so incredibly judgement. Makes me feel sick, to be honest, and there is so much more I would like to say, but, biting my tongue.

Aye, this crossed my mind as well.

that I'd always thought Five Below was one of these very trendy kinds of places like Urban Outfitters, for rich people to shop at. Apparently it's more like a 5 & 10. The more you know...
For some reason I also assumed Five Below was some Tween/Teen store for kiddy knick-knacks and stuff (like an oversized Claire's) but was pleasantly surprised when I walked in that it was more.

Sidenote about dollar stores: there's a reason why my community are thriving and have financial stability, not just for ourselves but for our kids' future and places like dollar stores helped my parents in that regard when it came to saving. As a naive kid I used to question why they would always buy cheap but I understand now, playing the long game.

So having kids make you economically poor and not having them make you emotionally poor.
I won't judge anyone for not having kids and would hope to have the same sentiment in return for having kids but I can at least affirm that I and every person in my circle that had kids became better people in so many ways. For someone who doesn't care much for kids either, having another perspective to look out for is very humbling. In other words I agree with this sentiment.

I am tempted to post a link to Stevie Stone’s Dollar General song here, but I will not because of the language.

When I was in Iceland the local town had a 5 Kroner store, but I don't remember if it was a franchise.

Dollar General- now there's a dirty word.

My Medicare OTC drug plan lists them as a retailer. Trouble is the nearest one is like an hour away. Whatever I save on the meds would get eaten up by the cost of gasoline.

I live in the USA, and I love Dollar Tree.

I've been shopping there for years. Up until last year, everything was a dollar or less. But last year they finally raised their prices to $1.25 or less per item. I grumbled a little, but still, that's affordable, I'd say.

Most of the items in my kitchen and bathroom are from Dollar Tree. I get craft supplies, hygiene Items, photo frames, closet organization, even food there.

If you hunt around, often there are often name brand items. I buy Tressemme conditioner from Dollar Tree. Name brand soaps and antiperspirants. Name brand toothbrushes and toothpastes. Whisps keto cheese snacks are usually $4.99 at grocery stores. But only $1.25 at Dollar Tree. They often have organic food items too.

Other than their hardware/automotive tools and children's toys, most of what they have, I would say, is good quality.

They also are competing these days with Target, for fashionable decor and cute stationary sets.

In my world, around Christmastime or Birthdays, you'll most likely be getting at least one item from Dollar Tree. The greeting cards and wrapping paper are most likely from there too!

I always hit Dollar Tree first, before the other stores.

Household cleaning goods sell for great prices there, even compared to Walmart. Yeah, it's a good place for certain non-critical values.

I'm in California. We have stores here, referred to as 'the Japanese dollar-fifty store', which is actually called Daiso. Very nice/tasteful items, and Japanese candies and whatnot. Same concept as 99c stores, but, on a completely different level.

I will have tree lock this thread if you feel like I’ve done something inappropriate by starting it. I’m very sorry.
I didn’t mean for some of these discussions to happen.

Which is why I don’t start a lot of discussion threads anymore, something always happens.

One thing I noticed at those type of stores here, when the covid chaos started I was stocking up and I saw some things I needed, household items like soap and tooth paste and garbage bags and such and they had better prices. So I bought a pile of stuff there to save some money. Then later I realized that the items I had bought were a little smaller. For example, the rolls with garbage bags I usually buy comes in rolls of 10 bags and each bag is 100 liter. The ones I had bought was just 75 liter. Same thing with the soap, instead of 0,5 liter it was 0.35 liter. So that's a trick they use. Sneaky. I did the math and I hadn't saved anything, it was roughly the same prices as in other stores.

My mom works at Dollar Tree and she brings me the best stuff. It feels like Christmas when she comes home with goodies. She recently bought me these cool water colors they had. They have great pigments for shading and lot of variety of colors as well.

Hi Luca,

What I had written had nothing to do with the subject matter of your post, nor you. I'm not sure what I said that would cause you to see it in that way, and I am very sorry if I upset you. I have deleted my post.

I wasn’t upset by anything you said, I’m so sorry! :( I never word things right…

I was worried that I had started a thread that had hurt your feelings and I felt terrible.
I feel like a lot of times when I start discussions they spiral out of control and someone gets hurt or there’s a conflict which is clearly not my intention.

Nothing I can do to completely eliminate the potential for conflict or misunderstandings sadly but I’m very sorry if any of my actions led to you being offended.

You are not responsible for other people's actions. I have no regrets for mentioning what I did, however, I can see that I may have been vague, and it would have saved you some grief, if I had responded to/directed my comment to the person, directly. I am sorry.

Don’t apologize! It’s all good :)

I wasn’t super clear about what I meant earlier either so it’s totally fine. I get it.

Hope you’re feeling better now.

To steer this back on topic, another thing I’m wondering if other countries have is huge discount stores where you can purchase things in bulk, like Costco or BJ’s.
It’s basically a warehouse that sells food, household items, clothes, toys, etc but you can buy a huge package of it for a discount price.

Okay my mom just got home from work and look what she got me. These straws are amazing and they have a cleaning brush inside, so you can reuse them. This is awesome!

We had a spate of those pop up in Australia about 20 years ago but they didn't last long. It's better these days, buy online instead and they deliver it to you.
