Funny story behind that - The Boston Tea Party.

The English imposed a 10% tariff on luxury goods going to America, including Tea.
The Americans revolted over this, massive riots and they tipped contents of ships in to the harbour in protest.
The English conceded to drop the tariff and the Americans believed that they had won a great battle.

Ever after the English sold the Americans smaller "gallons" of only 7 pints instead of 8. So now instead of getting the extra 10% they asked for they were now getting 12.5% extra on their goods.

Pieces of eight. :D
I love it when foreigners know more about American history than we do.

Of course I know about the Boston tea party. But the 7 pint gallon? Never heard that before.

Yep, an Imperial Gallon is 4.54 Litres.
A US Gallon is only 3.76 Litres.

So what is known in the rest of the world as a 44 Gallon Drum gets called a 55 in the US even though it's closer to 51 US Gallons.

I don't know if that carries through to other measurements or not but it's more than likely, so a US pint would be smaller than and Imperial pint. If that carries down to fluid ounces as well then it must make conversions for recipes difficult.

Only 7 pints in a US gallon - 3.76 litres. So 83 US cents per litre, in Aussie money that works out to a little over $1.25/litre.

Much cheaper than Australia.

A Pound is worth about 2 Aussie dollars so that works out to be a lot more expensive than us at Au$2.70/litre.

I'm surprised the Brits pay so much for petrol and they're charged congestion tax.

That is a riot (very old slang popped out of nowhere when I saw this.)

“55” gallon drums are used for all kinds of things here. Now I’ve totally lost faith in reality.

Are you saying that the “44” gallon drums in “the rest of the world” are also 51 gallons?
44 imperial gallons = 51 US gallons, yes. They're exactly the same drums mass produced all over the world and their size is very specifically to hold 44 Imperial Gallons. In the US you call those same drums 55s because your "gallons" are smaller.

It's doubly weird now that you're the only nation of consequence that still uses the old system, especially confusing to Europeans that know what a real gallon is but no longer use that system.

Drums today are slightly larger, for the sake of convenience they are now 200 litre drums instead of the 185 litres they used to be, it just makes counting easier. So these days your "55" is probably closer to actually holding 55 US Gallons.

Holden ceased to exist nearly ten years back now, and what's tried to replace them is oversized and ridiculously thirsty things from the US which no one really wants. So we're seeing a lot more European cars here now.

I bought a 12 year old Skoda. Really cheap on fuel and the back seats just lift out making it a perfect little travel wagon for a single bloke.

I saw one of those a few days ago. Nice looking vehicles though I prefer a smaller car due to the little roads I drive on.

Just fixed a little issue on mine ready for the MOT.

I was also pleasantly surprised buying fuel for the first time in a long while, it's the first time I've really looked at the price. I paid Au$1.80/litre for the Premium 98 octane

It is a long time ago since I was pleasantly surprised at a gas pump. I don't remember how that feels. Filled up the tank the other day. 3,04 Australian dollars for a liter. 😑 I felt violated. If they just cut the taxes, it would be a dollar for a liter.

Out of curiosity I just had a quick look and it seems to be a funny pattern in Europe. Eastern Europe is quite cheap but as you head further west it gets more expensive, and as you head further north it's even more expensive again.

You can set this list to whatever currency you're comfortable with.

Gas dropped a lot a few days ago here. Down around $4.19 a gallon. Even $3.99 at places like Costco and Sams. Making me wonder if the petroleum industry in California is now on the defensive given the new law aimed at curbing price spikes.

Which effectively allows the state to require oil refiners to maintain a minimum inventory of fuel to avoid supply shortages that create higher gasoline prices for consumers and higher profits for the industry

Nevada depends on California gas refineries....translating into California prices. Not to mention so many taxes associated with gasoline in the absence of state income taxes. :(

I thought Norway was a big oil producer?

When l moved into this park, the day of my move, there was a huge line of parked police cars, because a guy died, and his greedy girlfriend stuffed his body into a 55 lb metal can, so she could continue collecting his SS disability checks. Then she asked the neighbor to watch the can as she was leaving l guess, he got curious and opened it. Yup, just another FL story, that probably was an omen for me. Sometimes, l wish for a boring life.

Nope. Considered a "small player" in the global crude market.
How is that measured?
I always intuitively thought of Norway as a large producer, but had never looked at any figures, so I just did a check now, and it seems the answer needs qualification, but that's an unqualified appraisal! (e.g. I'm speaking from ignorance 😏)...

Norway
pop: 5.5
oil: 1.9
ratio: 1.9/5.5 = 0.345 o/p (oil per person)

U.S.
pop: 34.5
oil: 13.3
ratio: 13.3/34.5 = 0.381 o/p

So in absolute terms the U.S., as top producer by the barrel, produces 7 times as much.
But Norway is very close to matching the U.S. when counted per capita. I don't know much at all about how these things are used and expressed so going on my own common (non)sense , but it makes sense to me to measure on some sort of scaling factor such as population, or maybe landmass area, or other resource measure?
I guess it depends what's being compared as to which method is relevant?

Both Australia and Norway are large players when it comes to natural gas exports. The graph in the link below is interesting because it shows both how much gas was produced and how much of that was exported versus how much was used domestically.

Notice that Australia exports all of it's gas and uses almost none domestically. This is because of corruption in government. They sold all gas on contract before it was even extracted and retained no reserves whatsoever for domestic use. So the last couple of years the eastern states (where those same politicians live) have been suffering gas shortages which impacts industry and electricity generation.

Those politicians are still being investigated over this, if found guilty of corruption they could end up having to forfeit all personal assets which will be auctioned off, proceeds to go to public coffers. (proceeds of crime law)
