Good Take Away Food

Milk bars are a dying breed up here, in Northern New South Wales, although there are the odd one about, here and there. We also have "deli's" in more up market places. Here in my village we have Cafes and a "Trattoria". Everything is exceedingly expensive though, except for a new place, a Hari Krisna salad and samosa bar.

We have more vegetarian and vegan food than most places, in account of being a "hippified" village. In fact, nearly the whole of the North Coast is pretty eclectic and yogic and New Agey but also very touristy, trendy and expensive AF.

I like a good burger, fish &chips (with salad), healthy salady vegie food (I grew up on this fare) and I LOVE good south eastern, actually pretty much ALL "Asian" food. I like a lot of vegetable content, skillfully prepared, as that's how I eat, generally.

Our main choices in my village are pizzas which are good, but seriously overpriced.

Adelaide had a very large Italian population, and they take great offence to being called Wogs. "We're not wogs, we're Dagos!". So our corner shops just naturally got called Delis and they're exactly what the Italians call a delicatessen. Soft drinks, lollies, chocolates, smokes, hot meat pies, milk, bread, etc. Some of them cured their own meats and made their own cheeses too, they got known as as smelly delis. There's a lot of shops that give themselves airs and graces and call themselves Delicatessens and charge outrageous prices but if they only sell meats and cheeses it's not a proper deli.

They're a bit of a dying breed here today too, squeezed out between service stations and little IGA type supermarkets. Fish and chip shops have mostly evolved in to chicken and chips shops, which is fine by me.

I'm mostly a carnivore and not too keen on eating rabbit food but I like my vegies. It's a bit of a lie about the rabbit food too, it's a standard response in an attempt to avoid it when eating out. I can't stand the salad dressings, if it's got vinegar in it I hate it, although I'll eat it with a smile on my face if people are watching.

There was one time in Melbourne when I liked the salad dressing. This was such an unusual occurrence that I asked the chef about it, I knew him personally as well, and he showed me how to make it. It's just egg whites and lemon juice. You start beating the egg whites until they fluff up, then add a couple of drops of lemon juice while still beating. It all flops down in to just egg whites again but keep beating and it'll come back up fluffy again, then add a couple more drops of lemon juice. Rinse and repeat until the egg whites won't fluff up any more.

"Smelly Deli's" that's funny! :-()

My oldest daughter got a job, briefly, at one of the up market lame ones, in Brunswick Heads, but by that stage she was pretty over working in the hospitality and food industry.

Both my girls have worked at the two Italian pizza joints in the village here. They are pretty upmarket touristy joints, but the pizzas are great.

I really like my animal foods these days. I was vego for decades, but it was other people's agendas more than mine, and it ended up taking a terrible toll on my health. My digestive system is typically bad (for us autists) and the plant seed proteins weren't tolerated well, nor was my childbearing body's need for B12 and Iron.
There is an awesome old school prices, burger- selling milk bar in Casino and a pretty good one in Kyogle, but the one in Lismore we swear we will never go to again, after recently witnessing a non verbal teenager being treated horribly there.

The closer you get to the coast, the more trendy and pricey things get. No old school milk bars to be seen.

I'm gonna have to try making that salad dressing! I've never heard of it and I like trying new and different recipes.

There is a great Indian place in town that is local and very tasty. I love their goat curry special, along with some naan that is stuffed with coconut. I no longer order from their cocktail menu, though.

Here milk bars became almost extinct after being popular until 90s and now they are experiencing a renaissance.

Oh. Yay:) I am a fan of milk bars, I might be showing my age and being nostalgic, but, that's how it is. And where are you?
