Have you been to a music concert?

Following the discussion within the shout box, I have decided to create a thread and get everyone's opinion on music concerts. Considering that these environments are noisy and crowded, has anyone been to one?

I have been to three concerts to date. The first was an outdoor concert featuring Snow Patrol in Bangor. This concert was good and I coped well despite being surrounded closely by many people and standing the entire time. I was even with some friends of my brother's who I had never met before. I will admit that I was a bit nervous but I manged to get through it and enjoy myself.

The second concert was indoor at the 02 Arena in Dublin where me, my brother and my friend seen Kasabian. This concert went smoothly as well although I was a bit nervous at times. Since we were seated for the duration of the concert, it was much better than having to stand like the first concert I went to. However, when moving about the arena to get food or use the toilets, the crowds did become a bit of a problem.

The third and final concert I went to was Metallica at the Odyssey Arena in Belfast. Metallica being a heavy metal band, this concert was obviously loudest. I would say that this concert was the most uncomfortable of the three as it was very loud and there were a lot of drunk people walking about the arena. At this concert, I was only with my friend who was younger than me. Despite this though, overall it went smoothly and I had a good time.

Has anyone else here been to a concert? I've read on other forums of Aspies attending music concerts.

I've actually been to Battersea party in the park when I was younger and basically there was lots of concerts and celebrity singing that I actually saw Anastassia live, I must say, she sounded good (or was it that she was lip syncing), I couldn't tell, I was pretty young at the time, and nobody really knew the secret of lip syncing I wouldn't think? :lol2:

How did you cope with the concert though? Did you manage alright or did you get nervous?

I've read of some Aspies coping alright but then sometimes having panic attacks depending on the type of concert (seated/standing).

I was actually over excited at the time, I actually even saw Dick and Dom live too which was totally awesome and my best friend managed to actually get a signed autograph from them.

But of course, he moved to Yorkshire, so it pretty much sucked.

Yeah I get panic attacks at big shows or even small shows if its too overcrowded. Sometimes I'd be fine if I was on drugs. But I don't really recommend that because then you risk having a panic attack and being too disoriented to get out of there. And, you know, they're bad for you.

That's interesting actually. I've read before of Aspies taking alcohol to "loosen them up" and make them more calm/talkative in social settings. I actually met this guy at a bar once, who was supposedly really quiet but was clearly very social and loud when under the influence. I'm like the only person who goes to a bar that actually doesn't drink. :lol2:

And, you know, they're bad for you.

Agreed.

Very true so far including nervousness, very loud, drugs (which indeed are bad for you)...I'm not judgmental, but have known many addicts who couldn't stop and have either lost everything or died, so use caution.

I've been to a few: First one was Michael Jackson, second was New Kids On The Block, then Metallica, Alanis Morsiette, several Hanson and few country music shows.

For me it really depends on who I'm going with, how far in advance do I have to plan for it, and will I ultimately have control of things. If I can get there early before it is too chaotic and be seated so I'm not directly in front of a loud speaker, preferably an isle seat and next to a friend that is understanding, and can't wait while others leave before leaving, then I can really enjoy it and have fun....other than that it is depending on how much energy I have based on what else has happened that day.

i went once to a small one 40 years ago. I gave up after about 10 minutes. The noise, the crowd, the masshysteria. Annoyed the crap out of me. A chambre orchestra in small church is as close as i get since then.

I went to Reading Festival with two old friends one year. It was very fun throwing mud-balls and half empty bottles of water at 50 cent! How dare he perform at a rock festival. He had so much stuff thrown at him that he cut his set short with 45 minutes of it left. The Rasmus got the same treatment, although I felt a little sorry for them! I wish I had have been there there year before when Daphne and Celeste were there! Apparently the sky turned black because there were so many mudballs.

It was awesome though, I got to see placebo live. My two friends kept wanting to get as close as possible to the front and I just wanted to sit on the outskirts minding my own business. So it was a little awkward I suppose.

I also watched a now defunkt group called "The Cooper Temple Clause" on my birthday on year in Oxford. Because it was my birthday I could just be like "We're standing at the back out of the way and that's the way it is!" So that was good.

I've never really had much of a problem with crowds. Although I find restaurants extremely difficult to deal with. I think it's specifically too many people talking that causes me problems, but shouting, singing, screaming and typical crowd sounds don't cause any problems.

50 Cent is wack and has been for some time. His best music was made before he became famous, even before his hit "In Da Club".

Didn't Jay-Z perform at a rock festival too? I remember something about Oasis being unhappy with it.

I've been to a few concerts and I enjoyed them all, mainly because everybody else was there for the same reason as me and I actually felt a sense of belonging. I think it helped that a friend of a friend had a bottle of vodka with him, and we bought bottles of Coca Cola from the shop nearby and put vodka in them. I didn't get drunk, just tipsy enough so that I didn't mind the mosh pits.

Yes.

One of my earliest memories is of being at a Celine Dion concert before she became famous.

Yeah, Steps..
I got really pissed at my friend Jordan cause he said he was going to the last Oasis concert (We're big, British, Oasis fans) that was on here in Sweden, not far from where I live, and that I could pay him back later. I was so psyched, then he was like "Yeah my dad wants the money now.." a month before the gig, and I was like "oh..err.. I no have no money right now?" so I said I couldn't come.
AFTER the gig at some school thing, I met his dad who was like "..I didn't mean NOW now. Haha. Jordan just got mixed up or thought I'd ACTUALLY kill him if no one paid up"
GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!
It was, incidently, the last gig Oasis ever played before they split up.
I'm still furious, a year later haha :P

I also listen to a lot of bands that don't tour anymore, or don't tour in europe, so I kinda know where you're coming from.
My proepr concert, Steps, I was about 10, so.. Now I'm into more sophiosticated stuff and it just doesn't happen.

My grandma wanted to see Steps.:wtf: I was about 8 at the time and didn't really want to go, and when we got to the venue we found out it was cancelled. I'm not sure if it was actually Steps or a tribute group, I don't remember.

I've been to 2, the first was Aiden at the Concorde 2- Brighton, which was very loud, lots of moshing, didn't get involved. Didn't enjoy that time.
the second was Hatcham Social at the 100 Club, London. It wasn't so bad, I prefer Hatcham Social to Aiden.

I have worked as a steward at a venue which does a band night every other month, I tended not to be that close to the chaos.

That sucks.

I was looking to go to Oxygen this year down in the Republic but no-one else was able to go with me due to money constraints. I'm not that bothered about it now because the weather is pretty crap atm and I'd rather not be sleeping in a tent.

Dude, be glad. When I saw Steps, it "Started" at about 7 or 8, and there was like, an hour and a half before Steps actually came on, there were all these other support bands before, so by the time they came out, I was asleep on the chairs haha! It was a bit bad on their part to be honest.

Yeah, I was pretty happy it was cancelled, as I said, I didn't really want to go. I was afraid my grandma would embarrass me! I mean, a woman pushing 60 going to see a pop group? You don't see that every day, but still, whatever floats your boat, I guess.

Oh and Leiservampir, congratulations on becoming a moderator.
