Hi, I’n Ness. I was recently diagnosed with autism a few months ago, and it came as a shock to me, especially as an adult. I’m still trying to understand everything, but it’s going out alright. My parents don’t seem to have understood or processed anything in the months. They kinda doubt it, and idk what to do about that.
Anyway, about myself…. I really like a lot of things, like Pokémon, Zelda, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Kewpie Dolls, and zombie media (right now I’m trying to read all of Marvel Zombies!) I also enjoy drawing, and if I have the money, I also collect rubber ducks and plastic babies. Being diagnosed somewhat explains those hobbies.

Welcome! Sometimes it takes a while for family members, friends, and others to understand and appreciate our differences. Sometimes they might not understand. But what we can do is learn to understand and appreciate ourselves, and with those who seem like they might be open, to help them learn how to understand and work with you.

I imagine. They’re the ones finding it the most difficult to grasp since they’ve never considered it before. My school never caught anything, it wasn’t until other people around me with ADHD and autism suggested I’d get screener. Telling my parents apparently terrified them, but they just seem in denial now. I feel obligated to show them the report for my diagnosis, but it’s quite hard to bring it up when they scoff at the idea of any form of mental illness or instability. Oh well!

Severe co-morbids of ASD2/3 can be considered "mental illnesses," but without those, autism is just a difference. No one considers giftedness or left-handedness (by themselves) to be mental illnesses...

My parents basically consider any difference mentally to be bad. I think they consider my autism to be a liability and something “not fully normal,” so it’s bad in their eyes.

An autism-competent counselor can give you a better perspective. What country are you in?

BTW, there are some [third-world?] countries where people are persecuted just for being left-handed...

I’m from the US, it’s just that my parents are Vietnamese immigrants. I went to a counselor at my university who specializes in diagnosing autism, ADHD, and learning disabilities. She wrote me up an extensive report so I should just sit through it with my parents at some point, but it’s a difficult topic to even bring up because of their views on it.
