Hello, I am new and overwhelmed with new self understanding

thanks for admitting me to this forum. I seek understanding

still overwhelmed after three years ,I'm now 48 ,have the typical mental health problems that autistic people have and discerning whether that is autism or mental health problem ,is mind-numbing.
i'm in the UK ,where from what I've gauged ,Americans think we are advanced in diagnosis .
it took the national health service ,45 years to tell me I was autistic ,still don't understand it .

In the US there seems to be a tendency to place behaviors and perceived disorders in growing boxes
perhaps to increase funding for studies and to increase the apprehension that a growing problem exists, eg one out of sixty children are autistic. I was never diagnosed for a variety of reasons but simply regarded as different and quirky.
