Hi.

New Member
Hi, I'm Barry and I joined this site because I want to see if anyone else deals with what I do.
My wife sees a lot of autistic traits in me that also exists in our child, I also see similiaritied between our autistic child and myself and alot of things ive read on Pinterest and google all seem to point to the fact that I am autistic and my therapist claims that I have autistic traits but he says I don't have enough to be considered autistic and clinically dismisses anything that I find, he dismisses it as anxiety usually. My question is, should I take his word for it or because I see so many traits of autism in myself that I should just disregard his opinion and self diagnosis myself and not bring it up again to him?

First warm welkome to the forums Barry dear

Second if i were you i would leave this therapist and get another one and THERE ask for proper evaluation

One thing I also forgot to mention is that I did get a psych evaul and it didn't say I was autistic but that further testing maybe required to confirm or deny it.
Thank you for you reply Sarah S. I do appreciate it.

A well in that case you still have the right to ask for further testing then .

My pleasure if i can be at any help (just know this they dident find my ASD until i was nearly 30 (obviously i had it since birth as well as all my other diagnosis ) and i have gone thru MANY evaluations)

I definitely appreciate it. I just identify with some many of the autistic traits and it feels like it explains so much of me, yet I keep getting told that I'm wrong. It is definitely frustrating.

Yeah i know the feeling in my case the pros have tossed in the towel for finding anymore BUT they acknowledge that there are defenetly Multiple diagnosis yet to be find only its not likely that they will find them all

Yeah it's like my therapist will be like "Well, everyone sees things differently or thinks about things differently, etc, it doesn't mean you're autistic." And I'll find things on Pinterest that are exactly how I feel or think and he will be like "You can't trust them, that's only one person's opinion." And I'm thinking to myself like "Do you have something against labeling people with autism?" And he says that he has dealt with autistic people all over the spectrum but he pretty much mentions the autistic that can't stand the mouth noises or the one that's good at drawing or draws the same thing every session.

Yeah well in my mind he dont sound to me to know diddly about ASD to be honest cause i CAN stand much noises (do i like it ? NO but i dont freak out either, cant draw worth a ....... NEVER have) in short ALL this diagnosis are HIGHLY INDIVIDUAL.So again i would ask to see another therapist (and if you check my profile you see i also have among gazillion other side diagnosis to my MBD ,ADHD ,& ASD. Anxiety among MANY other and STILL i have ASD ;) Let me guess youre therapist is of the older age ?

Im obviously NOT saying you are or not having ASD or any other diagnose just that you are entitled to have this properly evaluated as in this case its clearly stated further testing is required for either dismissal or denial of said diagnose.

Some noises like someone drumming their fingers on something or scratching on something drives me insane at times and then other times I'm doing it myself. Yes he is of older age, late 40s I believe. My wife's therapist is like "I've never met your husband but from what you told me, he is most likely autistic." Yet my therapist is like "Unless you're super high functioning to the point where I can't see it I don't think you're autistic" and I really want to be like "So you're saying that myself, my wife and her therapist are all liars?"

I even had my aunt who has not seen me in over 20 years ask my wife if I was autistic when I was laying in a hospital bed getting ready for surgery, not sure if that's considered rude or not. It didn't seem rude to me but my dad said that he thinks it could have run in his family and my mom said I hadnanhard time looking people in the eye when i was younger like I would look anywhere other than their eyes and i would be very fidgety if people were talking to me and even to this day I have to force myself to make eye contact, even with my wife. But my therapist sees me for like an hour a week and he pretty much sees me at my best so to speak because their is not else going on, it's just me and him in a room for an hour.

We are running a support forum Barry, feel free to post as much as you'd like to gain the input you are seeking.

Hi Barry and welcome.
Outsiders can not SEE what you feel. And some things are often disregarded because they can't see the severity of what you might be feeling. Like I'd tell my sister how difficult it is for me to be in a social setting. She'd maybe say, "oh it makes me nervous, too." I had no way of conveying to her the degree of difficulty. No it's not like I'm a bit nervous around these people and would prefer to not go - it's more of an incapacitating state that causes me to freeze. She can't understand past what she may feel herself.
Same with your doctor. He's human and to some degree he's going to relate anything you say to something familiar to himself.
If you feel the degree of your suffering is much greater than normal, only you can see and know that. Only you know what's going on inside of you and that's where most the high functioning autism is going to be because you've learned to cover it and make allowances to help appear to deal with things better than you feel you are.
I'd take your wife's word over your doctors. She spends a lot more time with you than he does.
Added - I also am not diagnosing. I am assuming you know if the symptoms fit better than anyone else.
