How do you really feel about Feminism

So long as it's not the "tumblr version" of feminism, meaning "lets exterminate all men" and "omg I'm being oppressed because MEN are looking in MY DIRECTION" and is ACTUAL feminism, i'm ok with it

I'm almost literally sick of its misuse/overuse all the time. Just like I'm sick of the misuse/overuse of many words in the English language these days, especially "literally" being used to mean "figuratively", and "antisocial" being seen as exactly the same as "asocial".

And people using the F word all the time now and getting away with it. I just don't get it.

I think the feminism movement has sometimes gone too far with women demanding equality in everything. Men and women are not exactly the same biologically. For example, women can get pregnant and men can't; this basic difference separate the two genders largely.

Feminism doesn't have any meaning anymore, because it means whatever any given feminist wants it to mean. Also, there's a huge difference between feminist theory (as discoursed in sociology, philosophy, psychology, etc. by educated people trained to think critically and make well-reasoned, non-aggressive, rational arguments and assertions) and people who get on Facebook or whenever, call themselves feminists, and rant and rave without actually knowing what they're talking about.

Oh my god, every time I hear the word "literally" misused, my blood pressure elevates. Also when people say, "I know, right?" And don't even get me started on the F word... People are desperate to feel radical and rebellious and edgy, but they really just come off as vapid and boorish.

When people say, "I know, right?" I actually like this. Makes me feel like I have quickly struck an agreeable note with someone. Doesn't happen a whole lot.

But everything else, I totally agree with.

I reserve the word "literally" for when it actually means it. But because of the overuse, nobody takes it seriously. I end up having to say something like "no really... it did".

I consider myself a feminist because I believe that all genders should be equal and that we have a way to go still before achieving that. I feel that it is important to keep working towards that goal.

Oh dear, I say these literally all the time (sorry couldn't resist). I'm not sure how commonly used words and phrases are related to trying to feel radical rebellious or edgy, but luckily I'm ok with being considered vapid and boorish.

Sorry, my post was harsh and unclear. Re: vapid and boorish, I was actually referring to people who use the F word a lot. It makes them sound crass and childish.

I do stand by my dislike of the misuse of “literally,” though. The decline in vocabulary has been evident since the 1960s, so it bothers me that not only do people know the meanings of fewer words, they’re also misusing the words they do know.

I think I mostly dislike “I know, right?” because everyone says it. I’m sure more than one autistic person has been confused by it, too. It sounds like the asker is asking you to confirm that he knows, as though you’d know what he knows.

Feminists have kept decidedly silent on the injustices towards women found in foreign cultures, so I see them as unfairly singling out American, European and other men of Western culture as targets for their increasingly ridiculous complaints. This is unacceptable as I see it, and I will never embrace such a movement.
Are you calling out western feminists for working locally? You think they need to stop worrying about what is happening in their own backyards and concentrate there efforts overseas...really?

There are feminists in every culture and they are not useless or defective. They don't need westerners to demonise their culture in order to 'uplift' it to western standards. They're actually working hard and making changes gradually in their own cultures just, like western feminists did (and are).

I agree there is a time and place to step in or to be heard to support those in other cultures and countries but to suggest that if you're a western feminist and you're not trying to "fix" the problems in someone else's country/culture seems like bs to me.

If that's what its really like on there then I'm glad I'm not on Tumblr

I will probably receive negative comments, but I am old-fashioned. Of course, I believe women should get paid equally as men. However, I believe men are to be head of household and women ought to stand by their man...through thick and thin. I think women should be home raising their children while their husbands go out and work. Women ought to be respected and appreciated for their housework and the love they show to their husbands.

I definitely don't agree with you that women 'should' be at home and sticking by their man through thick and thin. I think who does what in a relationship should be worked out in each partnership, by the people involved. Some people are more suited to staying at home, others have more drive for a career etc etc. I would be best at home :tongueclosed:

What does "women ought to stand by their man...through thick and thin" even mean? If he beats her? Rapes her? Puts her down every day? Demands that she has to stand by him "...through thick and thin"? Takes control of all the finances and doesn't let her have any money?

"Oh, sweety, it's okay, you know best because you're the 'man of the household'."
Erm, no thanks.

I think women should stand by their man but men should stand by their women too. Thick and thin means if times are tough as a family even though both are trying, financial hardship, whatever it may be. Too many people of both sexes seem to just dump everything and go find someone else when times get tough.

Well, that's a whole different ball game to the way the other posters message read to me. A lot more palatable too. :)

I guess that if the two of them that haven't logged in for over two and a half years ever return, they might reply to you ;)

It looks like I've been up typing away in the middle of the night because of the time difference.
Right, well...feminist discussion drew them back it seems. And they both love cats. Funny.

It didn't draw them back, you are replying to members who haven't been here in a long time.
