I can't stop thinking about thinking.

I'm the same way. It feels like my brain never shuts off! And yes, I do sometimes feel like I'm thinking about thinking... it feels like my brain doesn't sleep.

I have never had issues with abusing drugs or alcohol fortunately but I am not able to sleep without meds that are prescribed to me for sleeping. If I was unmedicated I don't think I would ever sleep.
This isn't a new problem, I had to be put on sedatives when I was a teenager because I would go days and days without sleeping. It drives me nuts and I hate it. I wish my brain would just go to sleep sometimes!

This is interesting Luca - I have wondered about the sleep issues. I know someone who has a non verbal autistic girl and she has always had major sleep issues. I read somewhere that it is very common in girls .
I did not have sleep issues until I was a teenager and then really bad in my twenties.
And just like @foliodoe I would drink alcohol right before bed to sleep . 1 beer and 4 shots of scotch

I am glad I stopped doing that . Not a very healthy way to go to sleep . Now I just work really hard and exhaust my mind and usually do ok

I do not read philosophy much Thomas Hume and something Lee Smolin wrote in the eighties made me realize it is too esoteric for me. My older brother was really enthralled with it. Baruch Spinoza interests me a bit, as I am agnostic.
