Is anybody self employed?

Its a definite option after Uni. I can't stand employment and the workplace, I'd rather do what i like doing for a living. Though I've got a lot to learn.

I once ran my own business on Amazon selling comic books, books, graphic novels, and collectibles
I used to drive around Los Angeles and Ventura County to comic book stores on release days and resell hard to find or limited run issues. I was making Handsome profits for several months, then suppliers started getting finicky and greedy and I closed shop after I found a lucrative full time job.

The selling websites are heard to a perfect experience for the buyer. Which is understandable to a reasonable extent.

Buyers can complain to the site, honestly or exaggerated lies, and usually they get to keep the purchase and get a full refund. This is a terrible thing for comic books and erratically priced valuables. A person once did not read the sale listing, then was unhappy about the book received, complained, got a full refund and got to keep the book. Not cool!!!

Scammers have learned that sellers are vulnerable and at the mercy of large site like amazon and eBay. Beware and don't take it too personally if you get gipped once in a while. Cost of Business.

That said, I have over 40 paintings taking over my house and garage. I would love to sell them off, so if any entrepreneur wants to handle the business end of selling paintings,
I have a copious supply.

Yes, I work on electric vehicles, batteries, and battery chargers. I an semi-retired and do this part time.

I resell vintage and modern second-hand clothing via a selling app, though it's hardly a business - I don't make much at all! Though it's good to have the little bit of extra money.

I too gave up on Ebay, used to love it but the new regulations leave the honest seller open to unscrupulous buyers, so not using it again.

Good for you, Becky! Ya know, here in the Reno area we have two (brick-and-mortar) businesses that are thriving selling stylish second-hand clothing. They really give Goodwill fits sometimes!

Sounds briliant! I'd love to travel the US and source vintage items over there from Goodwill and the thrift stores, though my local car boot sale every Sunday isn't too bad either - lots of hard-to-spot but good quality items for around £1 or more. I like curating my little space on the app so it looks a bit more stylish & appealling!

It's fun to buy clothing second hand in general, since you can get some really unusual bargains!

Here's the URL for our biggest independent retailer of second-hand clothing. "Plato's Closet". Looks like they just keep adding new store locations! Quite a business...great idea for a start up, people!

I'm self employed as an accountant. I have worked with other CPA firms, but felt that things were not always at the highest level of integrity. I make a lot less income but I can sleep at night.
Starting the business and learning how to run the operation and get clients has been long and difficult.
I've been ripped off a few times because I don't read faces and body language well. Also, I tend to take people quite literately even when they mean to be funny or sarcastic.
The bottom line is that being self employed is still the best way for me.

I am self employed as well. I don't do well working for other people. If I don't like you I'll tell you very matter of factly and I don't care what you think! I deliver newspapers, scrap metal, property clean ups, bank foreclousers etc. Basically other peoples trash :-). It allows me to be able to take my daughter to school, pick her up, tend to the garden etc.

I've got a small job being a self-employed artist. I haven't registered myself beyond a Schedule C on my tax return and a bank account for it. I don't really see the point in getting a business license at my income level. Even though by IRS guidelines, I fall square into the "business" end of the hobby vs. business debate, but with this little article in mind I'm leaning toward "screw it". No more than I clear after fees, expenses, and vile taxes, there's no way I'd make a profit if I had to maintain a business license.

At my "day job", I work with my grandparents at their income tax office January to April. They're training me to take it over, so I'm kinda half employed, half self-employed there. So I've got a good idea about tax forms and records keeping for my income and expenses with both.

I don't mind working for other people, but my coworkers tend to drive me up the wall since they're pretty grabby, rude, disrespectful, and lazy, and my bosses tend to not know how the difference between their butt and a hole in the ground. So I'm just sticking to art and my grandparents, at least there I can have some say in trying to make the businesses the best they can be, and there is a high drive to do things right.

Between undertaking and tax preparation I'd likely choose the latter. But yeah...either way working in any field reflecting inelastic demand can be a good thing. ;)

Bah, sending me running to the dictionary so long after economics classes! Heheh, yes, it's good to have job security. Despite plenty of rumors otherwise. Part of me cunning plan. One stable job, the income taxes, to offset my unstable job/passion, art work. :D
Which gripes some art enthusiasts to no end, they don't believe in fall back plans. I don't think they're quite registering that they're pursuing an ultimately unnecessary/luxury field of work, and in a bad economy you want to have a foot in a necessity line of work.
