Is my mobile network EE conning me?

I went on to what Mildtedhubble said and it said non-operator data usage so I tapped on that and all the apps have their background data usage activated. I thought they were all deactivated, as what it says in the image I posted a few posts up. But I'm not sure what non-operator data usage means.
Hmmm, interesting, I suspect that could mean that it's not data usage that you initiated. I will do some googling and see what I can figure out. I don't think that my phone says anything like that, but my phone isn't really very posh :-)

Ok so it appears "non operator usage" means data that has been used through WiFi, so this metric does not mean data you have used through your mobile data.

Restrict Background Data Usage

"Chances are the apps on your device are trying to access mobile data or Wi-Fi connection around the clock.
As a result, this racks up a ton of data usage for you – which can be pricey if you're on a limited plan."

That is bad though, especially during these difficult times of price inflation and many working class people living below the poverty line. It seems businesses have gotten greedier and are taking the piss. It's not right.

In the App Data Usage menu, you can select each app and turn off Background Data for each individual app. Bear in mind though you may not wish to turn off this feature in apps that might be important or necessary for safety. So double check before you disable anything that you might be related to messages. But things like eBay can be safely switched off as far as background data goes. Though this might mean you miss out on notifications related to bids you've made until you connect to a WiFi connection.

You can also set a warning in the Data Usage Menu (one step back from the App Data menu). I think this is a worthwhile step as the moment your data usage goes beyond the limit you've set, you will get a notification on your phone :)

You are so helpful, @MildredHubble ! :)
I’m clueless with phones so I wouldn’t be of much use here. But you’re always so quick to solve tech problems! Thank you for helping everyone.
Thanks @Luca :-) that's very sweet of you to say! I'm sure you have learned lots of stuff about phones, that once the right opportunity comes along, you will think "Hey, I know how to fix that!" :-)

I think if we have knowledge that can help people I think it's good to share it. We can all contribute what we know and put our heads together and figure all kinds of things out :-)

^ Thanks, I'll have a look at that.

This has been set like this for months so I'm not sure how my phone is still using so much extra data.

Yes I'm using 5G at the moment because I'm not at home. But I only really go on this forum, Facebook and email when using my phone outside of home. With a lot of data it shouldn't use all that.
Misty, I am in USA so it is different but you did say Facebook: my sister's phone bill would go absolutely nuts sporadically and she couldn't figure it out and neither could her service provider
After lots of experimenting, she found that Facebook was doing all sorts of things overnight while she slept, including changing settings on her phone. Once she moved Facebook off her "real" phone to her old phone (not attached to her carrier, it only can hook up to WiFi), her phone bill went down to where it was supposed to be
if you have an old phone in the closet, you could try this and see if it makes a difference

I didn't know it costs so much for app updates? I asked on Google but it didn't mention anything about app updates being so expensive. I've disabled background activity from apps.
This might be a big part of the problem. Every time I go to google play it asks for my credit card number. I have never given it my number and I never will.

A lot of people fall in to these sorts of traps and I don't understand their thinking in this area. "Wow, I can let google suck money out of my account without even asking me, how convenient."

Admittedly I can be tighter than two coats of paint but if someone wants money out of me they have to specifically ask for it.

I'm of the opinion that virtually everyone selling goods and/or services is attempting to recoup their losses during the pandemic at any and all costs. And as rapidly as possible. Fuel, utilities, communications....all going up and up one way or another. Making attempts to corral inflation even harder.

to recoup their losses during the pandemic at any and all costs.
There's a lot of large corporations being taken to court here for claiming government subsidies and handouts during the pandemic and then showing record profits greater than any shown before the pandemic.

Our famous airline may even be forced in to recievership, they've ripped off the government and all of their customers consistently for more than 3 years now and they are being forced to pay it all back.

These days I simply feel getting "nickeled and dimed" by well....nearly everyone I do business with. Truly.

This is why I don't want another pandemic and I was against lockdowns in the first place. The economy can't handle it and now everybody's suffering (except the rich).

Ah yes, of course! The dreaded Facebook! You are quite right, I should have thought of that @ra49 ! Good thinking :-)

I guess since I don't use Facebook it wasn't something I thought of as readily, though last time my girlfriend had a similar issue with her phone, that was the culprit.

Facebook likes to install itself on my phone, even though I never consented to it. I've removed it, only to find it back on my home screen randomly. Facebook did a deal with several phone manufacturers to make it a "default app". I had to disable it in my phone settings as even though I don't have an account, it was basically calling home and using data!

Good catch! :-)

I'm trying to turn off the autoplay feature on Facebook but there's so many settings that I can't find that option even when I type it in.

The facebook settings and facebook itself is something only a supervillain could come up with. You have to be an evil genius to make that. It's like something from a James Bond movie.

I wonder how many people are paying outrageous phone bills and are not aware that it is because of problems like this, apps and phones doing things on their own. It's very close to what I would call theft and scamming people.
