Looking after oneself ie hygiene

lol, that's the opposite I once had. A supervisor once took me aside and complained how I smelled a bit... and should clean myself up. That by itself might be a case of bad hygiene.. however, when it's almost at the end of a 8 hour shift of physical labour, I found it quite hilarious. I asked him if he was joking... but apparently he wasn't and made a big issue out of it.

There is a very thin line drawn between talk it out and knock it out...:D

My hygiene used to be horrendous. It's now improved to mediocre.

I like showering and washing myself - except my hands. When I'm done bathing, I have to apply Sprite or 7up to my hands. Or something with sugar.

I a
I love bathing, shaving, etc. One of my favorite things is right after I get a haircut, and go home and wash my hair. It's "keeping up appearances" that I don't like. Sometimes I feel like people can tell when I'm in a bad mood even when I look my best. So sometimes it feels pointless, but I try to look how I would find myself attractive if I was somebody else. Right now, I have a goatee/moustache, and I like it a lot, but it makes me feel "scruffy" so it might have to go.

I often wear the same pair of jeans or a button-down for an entire week or more, if they don't get very dirty, and I can tell people around me think it's "unhygenic," but I just see it as being practical and not wasteful.
I agree.

I take shower every day, if I could I would do it twice a day, I'm just too tired in the evening. Shower wakes me up and calms me down. It's not necessarily about hygiene but it's more of a part of my routine. One of my kids hates showers (sensory thing) another one likes them. I do need to be clean and "put together" to feel focused and ready to go places do things, otherwise I would just want to go back to bed and sleep. :)

A shower feels like a painful hailstorm when I get in (no matter how I adjust the spray), but once I adapt to it, I don't want to leave the warmth.

I love baths! I am asking my apartment complex to install a bathtub for me, as I have the space for it. Baths really help me de-stress and cope better, so I hope I can have a tub soon!

Love your description of a shower as a painful hailstorm!

Here's hoping for a bath tub for you!

That's the second time I've heard an Aspie refer to showers as painful. I guess it's a conflict based on light touch?

I don't like the showers that feel like when you stick your hand out the window at 70mph when it's raining. Ooo, those little needles of water... I like big fat drops of water at slower speeds, they aren't as painful.

I have put my whole body out in the rain at 70mph...it stings exposed flesh, but the zen on a motorcycle cancels it all out ;)

If you're willing to pay for the bath tub yourself and the installation costs, they might be happy to give it to you then. Otherwise, you'd have to consider a different place to rent.

I'm so glad that I'm not overly sensitive to water! Hygiene is important overall, at least in our society! It's not appropriate or fair to others if you smell. There are others who don't care about their hygiene, but usually it's a small number. I also have a bad sense of smell, which helps. So, if I was working in a restaurant and a bunch of sweaty baseball players came in, I'd still be able to smell it, but probably less so than others.

One could also say that it is offensive that people smell like artificial flowers and heavy chemicals (axe body spray), I mean, I don't like those smells, but these things are currently culturally acceptable. Different cultures have different rules when it comes to smell. So, I would say it is ethnocentric of you to make this comment. (No offense intended).

While you bring up a good angle that I did not think of, what I said would not necessarily have to imply that someone should use body spray. Maybe there are cultures that don't wash at all and don't believe in it? Not sure. I can see how some might be sensitive to body deodorants. Is it okay to say that people in most cultures can be expected to wash themselves generally speaking? This line does need to be "drawn" somewhere too, and maybe it's very different in different countries and regions.

I shower regularly, but I think the hailstorm/painful feeling may be due to some sort of touch sensitivity perhaps? I need to feel that I am clean. This gives a feeling of security.

My point was that different smells are deemed acceptable by different cultures. When I lived in France, I smelled levels of BO that would have been deemed quite unacceptable, at least in New York. But, that by no means says that those in France don't wash at all (that would be ridiculous and offensive to assume. Edit to add: I'm not implying that you are making assumptions such as this one :)). There are just different rules when it comes to what is acceptable relative to human body odor. In my opinion, no rule is more valid than the other in this situation. That was my point.

It's a little creepy when someone seems to prefer you smelling nice, especially when circumstances make that impossible. I expect my coworkers to stink at work. We have a very dirty job. I just stay upwind. I don't take it personally if time and perspiration have their inevitable way.

As stated above, my job is very dirty, so coming home and scouring it all off feels divine.

In winter I don't like the feeling of being undressed and cold before I wash, but I love the feeling of warm water over my body. I need to adjust the shower so the water jet isn't too powerful because that can be painful.

I like taking baths too, and reading in the bath, but I can no longer afford that luxury. When I was a kid, the first thing I'd do after coming home from school was to go and take a bath. I'd take a book and stay there until the water got too cold, at least an hour. Warm, soothing, relaxing, quiet and the best thing, I was at last ALONE!!!

I like it once in I the shower but I hate the prospect of having to undress and get into the water... It takes a lot to get me in the shower but it also takes a lot to get me out. I usually take 30-45mins in the shower but I sometimes go 4 days without showering. I don't tend to sweat so I never smell and my hair doesn't get all that greasy either. I hate being unclean and always wash my hands (my family always say I have OCD with washing my hands) so my mum is often surprised I don't get in the shower more readily. I also hate having wet hair get my clothes wet after I'm done showering !!

I had one employer buy me deodorant when I was much younger. Hahaha
Bahaha... I have had this happen, too!

I love being in the shower.. it's the interrupting whatever I'm doing and the cold bit before getting in that I loathe.

Quite true. I don't trust an aromatic handyman. A scented handyman is a lazy handyman. I also don't trust a mechanic who doesn't have black hands, even if he does worship GoJo.
