new here, hello

I like ants. Did you know? Sick and injured ants are given medical care but very sick
ants practice self isolation.

hey, you can call me aphelion on here. i'm 23 and i've been diagnosed since 17 with high functioning asd!
my autism affects just about every aspect of my life and i like to advocate for the understanding and accessibility of those with autism the best i can. i used to dislike being autistic but i've come to really enjoy myself and my personality.
i've been described as erratic yet calculated (haha), intelligent, distant, and kind, though a bit distant and aloof as well.
my interests include the concept of consciousness and things that relate to it, such as biology and cosmology. i'm not well versed in such subjects though, as it's hard to come across useful information, so i'm open to any cool facts and knowledge about these subjects. dna is a recent special interest of mine as well.
i also want to learn various languages, including coding languages.
i love bugs and i enjoy creating art and stories that involve my art, but i have chronic illness which makes it hard to enjoy my hobbies as often as i'd like to.

it'll be nice to meet you all!
I’d love to see your interesting facts about bugs:)

Welcome! I was trained in molecular genetics and cell biology, but for the past decade have gotten into aquatic macroinvertebrates, mainly insects, because it gets me back into taxonomy, the basis of Biology. I collect them in local rivers then spend the time identifying them to the family level. This data is used to determine how healthy the rivers are because different orders and families differ in their sensitivity to pollutants and other physical factors like oxygen saturation. If you want to learn more and help with such projects like that, Conservation Districts always enjoy having volunteers and are happy to get people to help out. I find it loads of fun, but then, I already know I'm odd.
That is so cool.

How do I help ants not invade the house but not hurt them? It's so sad when I have to use any pesticide

Sadly I don't have a solution. I feel the same. If you could locate the nest you might move part of it successfully, but its usually a case of the next being in a wall, or somewhere else you can't get to. If you treat around the house perimeter that may stop them from foraging in or moving in. It would kill scouts but the nest itself would survive.

I live in the woods and have 3 different type ants coming in most years. The carpenters being the most problematic. I might just ignore the tiny species. They don't eat much after all. But my wife is having none of it. :D I have at least over time gotten her used to the idea of letting the wolf spiders live and roam the basement however as they don't bother you and keep other things down. Centipedes I have to catch one at a time and put them back to work outside. It's tricky because if you upset them they spay a really noxious chemical that lasts days. And they get upset easily. I have to trick them into thinking they are going on a vacation cruise liner.

;)

Welcome, I also have an interest in biology and any animals including insects (I took classes of it in college back when I was able to attend). I have several chronic illnesses, a few of which are chronic regional pain syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, and chronic migraines lasting for more than a few weeks, so if you ever need to talk to someone about it, my messages are always open.

I saw a clear wing moth out at the horse pasture today.

My avatar is from a photograph that I took of a dragonfly several years ago. I enjoy macrophotography and insects are one of main things that I photograph along with flowers
Nice. I'm still waiting to see my first Hummingbird Hawk Moth this summer. They usually turn up at the Butterfly Bushes.
Hopefully one will show up soon. I have not been seeing the actual hummingbirds that usually come to my yard, but I thought I heard one .
