Newbie, games designer, aspie / ASD self diagnosed

Hey guys! Pleased to meet you all. My name's Aaron, Im 29 from the UK and I first self diagnosed myself as on the spectrum back in 2019. I have always been quite different to everyone else, excelled in arts and music and storytelling - currently developing a Myst style point n click adventure puzzle game called Neyyah which you can check out on Steam (link below). I have always been creative, but have struggled to keep relationships / friendships and I feel that I definitely do see the world in a very different way. I have never been officially tested, but I'd say I do have ASD, most likely aspergers syndrome - I can't stand discussions in a room amongst a group of people going off at the same time, and don't tend to keep eye contact very well ... There's a whole list of other symptoms I tick, but yeah, it's cool to sign up here and see what everyone else is up to :) Im from the UK, and lived in Western Australia for 7 years, before moving back to UK last year. I now currently work as a carer, developing my video game :) Here's that link if any of you like puzzle adventure games, or Myst style games in general ;) Neyyah on Steam (steampowered.com)

Hi and welcome, I hope you enjoy it here. Your game sounds interesting, hope to hear more about its development as you progress with it.

I love interactive fiction games. Good luck Aaron!
Have you heard of Samorost? I made a post on Samorost 1 in case you're interested.

Hi Aaron Gwynaire
I'm also from the UK. I have also always been quite different to everyone else, liked art.

Welcome to the forums.

Good luck with career and hope you enjoy it here.

Thank you :) Yes, art is great :P You can express so much through so many different tools :)
Great to be here!

Welcome fellow aspie game-maker! I create board games. I've published Heir to the Phoenix Crown, Numinous Nonflict, and Voice of Conscience to name a few. Your game looks interesting, and potentially something that I could play. I get terrible simulator sickness from most first-person games, but if the movement isn't really movement, but just "click and shift perspective" it might work for me.
Hey how's it going? :) I'll check them out! :) You might like Neyyah as it runs in a 2D slideshow screen to screen format. Here's a link to a playthrough from 2019: Neyyah - 'Spore Docks Island' Test-build CUT VERSION - YouTube - shows an example of gameplay in action. Thanks for reaching out! Nice to meet you :)

Welcome, sir.

Interesting to see a developer here.

I've done some game-dev stuff myself... contracted to an indie dev I know (made a game called Starward Rogue, and a couple of other things), and I know what it's like. It's a whole ton of work, eh? Also a ton of bugfixing, I dunno how professionals do that every day without going totally mad.

Honestly the biggest problem you're almost guaranteed to run into, and the biggest problem for most small devs right now, is actually getting noticed on the bloated, festering mass that is Steam. So very, VERY many times I see great games by great devs get utterly ignored on that accursed platform. I hope you're selling it in places beyond just Steam.

I've thought of trying to do some solo dev stuff myself, but.... yeah, that's why I havent tried it. I always have the thought of putting some unholy amount of work into a game, and then like 3 people play it for 10 minutes and it's forgotten about afterwards.

I've forgotten where I was going with this.

Good luck in any case, and I hope you enjoy the forum.

Hey, how's it going? Well I'm a solo developer, so I develop everything, from all the concept art through to the 3D work, then also the construction (I use Visionaire Studio 5 ... it's fantastic for point n click adventure games), and also I'm a musician and have worked in music production over in Western Australia, where I lived for 7 years, so I will also be recording sound and music for the game too.

Neyyah already has a fairly big following behind it, and the wishlists are doing exceedingly well on Steam. I also in discussion with two publishers currently, and will be looking at GOG as well as itch.io - and hopefully hard copies as well.

That's where the real test is ... Are you doing it for yourself, because you just love to do it, or for the external attention? The heart really has to be into it. I have come to learn that anything like attention, money, sales ... it's all bonuses. The real thing that matters is the process. Focus on this, put your heart and soul into it, despite any possible incomes .... and surprises can happen!

There's some great motivation compilations of the greats (Spielberg, Cameron, Lucas ...) all talking about their views on what makes success, and it stems from so many things. Everyone will view it in a different light for sure :)

Thank you so much, feel free to check out Neyyah on Steam too at Neyyah on Steam (steampowered.com) :)

Raederle: is that a Patricia McKillip reference? As in, Raederle of An?

Welcome, Aaron, to the forum! I'm not much of a gamer, but the last game I payed on Steam was The Beginner's Guide, more of an art piece than a game, and quite thought-provoking and furtive when played through.

Hey great to meet you :) You might like Neyyah, as its more about exploring and learning about a world than a game as such, though the puzzles are there to help keep you wanting to find out more and explore new areas :P Feel free to check it out on Steam. Are you an artist yourself?
