Newbie….member and diagnosis :)

Hey everyone

I finally took the plunge after much extensive research, like we all do ;p and got my diagnosis last weekend! My husband was shocked but also said it made sense lol I’ve had the same reaction from my closest too

I’m 36 married with two children both of school age. Both display a lot of traits so part of my reasoning was to help them embrace their unique weirdness too ;)

Well that’s my ‘small talk’ over with ;) come say hey!!!

Welcome, @Maskella . It is great that you are supporting your children. I grew up when Autism was rarely diagnosed and had to learn to cope by myself. I am acutely aware of the lack of social skills that come with ASD and hope you will look to their development in that respect. Social isolation was damaging to me.

Ahh thank you, I have first hand experience with Asperger as my late dad was and so are both my uncles…coincidence?? Lol so I’m lucky I know what to look out for with the social side of things. He has lots of friends and definitely the most sensitive so my worry is more when he starts secondary school, but will deal with it :) ahhhh I know exactly what you mean with that but on same sense ASD dream right? ;p but I can see where you are coming from as we have to actively Learn these skills and that was definitely lost during isolation

Thank god for music and films!

Welcome to Autism Forums...where you can actually relate to others on a level that has likely eluded you most of your life! ;)

hahaaaaa so excited for this ‘unique weirdness’

In my quest to determine who and what I actually am neurologically speaking, I came to the conclusion long ago that interacting with my own kind was far more beneficial than reading rather dry medical reviews on the subject of autism. Hope you achieve the same here....where perhaps the most important thing is to know that you are not alone.

haha ahhh I’m glad it’s helped you :) apart from my family I’ve never knowingly met my own kind so I’m excited to see and hopefully make some new friends :)

having said that the friends I have pretty sure they are too as can see the traits a mile off and often find I’m attracted to like minded lol

Hi, welcome! :)

Hopefully you will enjoy it here. We are a lot of fun :D

Haha thank you and yessssssss This sounds great! In my life I usually start things with ‘sorry if I offend you but…. ‘I’m going to anyway’ lol I have very warped humour, gets me into trouble alllllll the time!!

If you can, see if there's a child psychology unit in your part of the UK, that has a classroom for children ,as your son would definitely be better learning to be autistic and NOT masking the rest of his existence ,I so wish ,I had been given that form of education, than suffering state and private education, where I left with no qualifications.

Oooh I will look into this thank you for the advice, school hasn’t picked it up yet as such but they have made certain adjustments for him ‘moving him closer to the front’ he gets taken out for certain emotional development classes but he hates he’s an outkast so I’m thinking of making an appt to see his teacher especially now I have been diagnosed as I know a lot is to do with the lack of funding so they don’t like to mention it

ahhh I’m sorry you struggled, when did you get your diagnosis?

My sense of humor is immature at best and gross at worst lol. So I understand! :p
But my favorite is wordplay!

It's all in the numbers. Seeking out less than two percent of the population to find your own kind in the real world remains a daunting proposition.

Though in learning about so many autistic traits and behaviors it has allowed me to conclude that at least two of my relatives are likely on the spectrum as well, apart from someone I worked with for many years.

yes I very much think it’s hereditary and it’s good to see it in those family members. Do they know they are or in denial? One of my uncles omg the denial is cringe as it’s just so blatantly obvious
