Night Owls vs Early Birds

I like being a night owl! I like to stay up and do whatever I want. I feel like it can have its pro’s and con’s sometimes. Being a night owl can suck when their are times when I want to go to sleep, but can’t shut off my brain. I don’t know if other people feel the same, but I was thinking about it and wanted to comment on it.

I also would like to be an early bird as well. I feel like you can get more stuff done. It can make you more productive with getting things done. It can also be painful to get up, which is what I struggle with. I try to do it, then I end up going back to sleep anyways.

I love getting up early. These days I go to bed around 7-8 PM and wake up around 3-4 AM. I get nice quiet time to do what I want before work. I also feel like I can engage in my interests and accomplish things before it's light out, and people in my area are up. Then I have most of the day ahead of me.

That’s awesome to hear I’m happy you are able to do that for yourself. Thinking about how everyone has a different way of going about their day and accomplishing their goals is so cool. We all operate differently in a way that works for our individual needs.

I'm a morning person these days. Used to be a night owl when I used to drink. These days I'm in bed between 20:30 - 21:45 and awake between 05:00 - 06:00.

Being a morning person feels helpful in winter. Back when I used to drink I found it a little bit disconcerting when I would wake up late - around midday, and then after a few hours daylight it's dark again outside.

Scientific studies suggest being a morning person is the healthiest approach. Although I understand the appeal of being a night owl. But now I'm in my new process, I see that being up early is more beneficial.

Night owl here.
I go to bed about the time you get up.
Then I sleep until almost noon. When others are having lunch, I have breakfast.
Dinner is at 8pm.

That's just my circadian rhythm, I guess. Always been that way, except during
grade school.
The man I house-share with is the same.
He is a retired cop and had all different times for his shifts when he worked.
So did I when I was a pharmacist and did night deliveries afterwards.
We pretty much do our own thing during the day and eat dinner together.
Then we watch TV at night until 1 am.
He goes to bed at that time, and I go to my PC until 3 or 4 am.

@Raggamuffin the night is quite and a peaceful time for me. I enjoy it.

I always got up early as a kid, and was stuck watching televangelists until cartoons came on. But, at least I was the only one awake in the house.

I get up at noon and lunch is considered breakfast to me. I’ve been like that for four years now. I was in online learning most of the time I was in college, so it worked perfectly for my schedule. I usually eat dinner around 4 or 5 pm with my family. We always stick to a schedule with eating at the dinner table together.

My rhythms have been all over the place for the last year or so but I prefer it when I go to bed about 10:00 and wake up at 6:00. That was a rhythm I had for more than 25 years of working life and I prefer it. I like seeing the world brighten at dawn.

I’ve always been an early morning person. As a young child i delivered morning newspapers and was back home before anyone else was up. I loved being outside under the starry night sky.
The quiet when no one else is awake is soothing.

Night owl here. I was never a morning person at all. Then one day at my old job, my boss asked if I would like to give night shift a go while one of the regular night crew was on holiday. I have never been more alert, awake and productive. I continued the night owl life as best I could after I left there. Quiet, peaceful, electricity is cheaper, internet is faster. Just have to respect the early birds and not make too much noise!

I've always been a night owl. But for my responsible adult life (ie family, etc) I almost never stay up past 2:30. My wife is starting to become a morning person which she never was before. She's starting to go to bed as early as 8:30pm and getting up between 3-4am. It's starting to rub off on me a bit because I'm starting to go to bed earlier too. The main disadvantage to staying up very late in my opinion is when I sleep until 10:00-10:30 and finally get going, it's already afternoon. Half the day is already gone.

I am both. I think it probably all began when I worked a split shift for over a decade. 7 to 11 in the morning and 4 to 8 at night. This started a pattern of a long afternoon nap and a short sleep overnight. This still seems to be my main habit, but I do notice my sleep patterns currently evolving, three months into sobriety. Just not sure which way the patterns are forming.

Like many of you, I fully enjoy the wee hours. The late late night and very early morning both are my favorite times, so this fractured sleep doesn’t seem all bad to me.

I'm both. I'm primarily a Night Owl, because daylight makes me ill and I love the calm energy of darkness. I like to stay up until almost dawn so I can enjoy the dark as much as possible. I usually go to bed around 4 am., but sometimes as late (early?) as 5 or 6.

Unfortunately I also have sleep disorders, meaning I only sleep for about 4 hours. I wake up around 8-9 am most mornings because of daylight, anxiety, and my pets who want to eat. Despite the lack of sleep I enjoy being up early when the house is quiet and everything seems peaceful, so I can identify as an Early Bird as well.

I'm running at a solid 10 am - 6 pm sleep time right now. If I was fully alone and without responsibility, I'd be okay with any schedule and I'd just adapt to what I wanted out of a day. Sadly there's more noise and obligations at certain times of day so it's awkward to move things around. Really wish I was free in this regard, I believe sleeping with alarms is very bad for you.
