Olympics

Does any one else here enjoy watching the Olympics? If so, what sports/events do you enjoy the most? I love watching sports in general, but it is fun to watch sports that are are not shown often. Many of the athletes are not professionals, and have regular day jobs, which shows the dedication of the athletes. As a runner, I like to watch the track events especially the long distance running. Swimming, diving, gymnastics, and volleyball are also fun. It is remarkable what the best in the world in each sport can do.

I do and I almost can't believe Norway took the gold medal in the decathlon. The last time that happened was in 1920! That guy is a hero here in Norway now. All hail Markus Rooth.

I enjoy the same events you listed. With the addition of BMX and Archery, both of which Ive only just gotten into, as of these Olympic games.

Nice idea for a thread!

I have been enjoying synchronized diving, field events (shot put and hammer throw), BMX biking, and table tennis.

I watched the solo whitewater canoe races. The gold medalist Jessica Fox is a real joy to watch. She's an Australian.

By accident I watch the women's rock wall climbing. If you get a chance, check this out on youtube. The race itself is only about 7 seconds long. I can't believe how they climb so fast.

I enjoyed watching the Tour de France this year, but I absolutely refuse to have anything to do with the Olympics, except to boycott any company that makes too much noise about sponsoring them. Amateur sport should be conducted in rented facilities, in various venues around the world, with the winners flown to a central awards ceremony. As it is, the IOC is a huge, corrupt business that invariably causes major disruption to host cities, wastes vast resources, displaces poor people, and leaves a big hole in the budgets. The TV revenues should go to supporting amateur sport, not developers and their favourite politicians.

I love to watch gymnastics. Simone Bile is unbelievable.

The opening ceremony making a mockery of the Last Supper turned me off. I expect the closing ceremony to make a mockery of Islam and Judaism, just to even the playing field.

What always fascinates me about most every Olympics is that the human condition seems to always progress...making me wonder where our absolute physiological limitations may be. And without artificial or genetic means of enhancement.

With a gifted few who continue to "push the edge of the envelope". Astounding.

Regardless of whether they are subsidized by the public or private sectors.

In athletics, the men's 10000m was amazing - the top 13 finishers ran under the previous Olympic record.

I can't imagine how it'd feel to finish outside the top 10 but know that you were faster than anyone else at any prior race.

The Kayak Cross is proving to be interesting.

Though I think they should turn in their oars for pugil sticks.

Make it a contact sport. RAMMING SPEED! :p

Watching volleyball tonight, remembering when I used to play it. I'm thinking about how much being on a volleyball team taught me about interacting with others. Volleyball was a good source of structured and purposeful interactions when pure socializing was such an elusive mystery.

I've been thinking that the canoe slaloms should have rocks in the route. But only Gerald Wilgus will probably get that one.

That took a very long time to come to fruition. I hope the presenter doesn't attempt to kiss them. ;)
In real time while I observed this, I didn't understand it at first. It still seemed so odd....awkward. But for the athletes in question it was vindication at its finest.

I just wasn't aware this controversy remained unresolved for as long as it did, but I can understand why the Russians dragged their heels. I guess they may be on "double-secret-probation" indefinitely.

Wow! Watching these climbers is mesmerizing and amazing.
Very enjoyable.

Agreed. I had never seen that in a competitive environment. Wild to think we have such facilities right in the middle of Reno on a hotel external wall.
