Oops, l think our roofer decided to take the money and split

If it weren't for people freaking out over things they don't understand, I would try making loads of things like that. Every little bit of energy you get for free is a win :-)

I live in the middle of nowhere, have no zoning or homeowners' association to dictate what we do to our house and land, so we do some weird stuff, too. We're free to be as creative - or tacky - as we wish. May it always be so!

That sounds so nice! I wish I lived somewhere like that! :-)

Here in Ontario Canada, we have building codes that apply everywhere in the province even in rural areas. My brother in law built his own house, very rural area very ad hoc shows I Have an eye for architecture, I guess he does not. Most code is about safety, not appeal.

In Florida it is mostly about appeal and pacifying the developers. I live a mile off a road and there is a locked gate. Every thing done here was without a permit and much of it would not pass code.

In Collier County, Florida, which is on the SW coast, Naples essentially. Somehow, a bit of Collier County got located on the east side of the county, with the Big Cypress Swamp in between it and the county seat. No one there pulls permits. It takes an hour and a half to get to Naples on Alligator Alley. Every now and then the county tries to enforce something out there...

I think Chokoloskee is also that way.

Or maybe it's all changed. I haven't been there in 15 years.

The region I lived in up north was like that. The state government broke up all the individual town councils and turned the entire territory in to 3 super shires. When they redrew all the boundaries Dundee got left out. So no one was paying any council rates or land tax.

Two different councils were fighting to claim the region, and the locals kept backing whichever side was losing, the idea was to maintain a balance so that they'd never have to have a council. That situation still isn't resolved. :)

I would not want to live some where with no code electrical fires, collapsed roof during storm or snow load. my life my kids life and my grand children's lives are too important to me.

It's a remote region that never receives that kind of help anyway. The roads usually get washed out every year and they're cut off from the rest of the country for a few months at a time. I went through a few cyclones while I was living there, everyone pitches in and helps each other and everything's mostly back to normal again before emergency services can get anywhere near us.

Might as well be northern Ontario, no roads period, my brother in law goes hunting up there. And we think he is north where he lives, lots or room the go even farther west and north. So remote even remote is remote. I can drive to Florida faster than I Can drive across Ontario 24 hours.

I know. Because I have done both. I drove north in SK until the road quite literally ends. Then I flew into the wilderness from that. I doubt those tiny towns have building codes.

Many parts of extreme north in Ontario, have zero people just trees and wild animals lots of deer and moose. lakes,
only place to take plane is land on lake, absolutely nothing there.

Yes. That’s where I was only in SK. No people. Just trees, rivers, lakes, moose. Also in Quebec. In most of Canada there is wilderness in the north.

Yes huge empty country. Most of use live in close proximity to American border. Go camping on property 3 hours north of where we live. Just rock and bush, no top soil, also no bother Son's and friends love it.

We just had code enforcement driving down our street. A true hoarder moved in. There are 300 potted plants in front of the house. The carport is growing boxes upon boxes. l am pretty sure they will be reported for fear of a fire starting.

Oh dear. Can they do that if someone is hoarding? 300 plants is a lot!

It's the proliferation of boxes starting to grow in the carport and back of the house, and our houses are a little close to each other, so a fire starting is a big concern,.

Our roofer dropped off supplies in our garage. Thank god, l thought they took off. Maybe there is a ray of hope here.

Apparently they had a medical issue come up, and that stopped us from being in the loop. We arrived home today and found roofing materials unloaded in our driveway. Of course l thought no way can l do this myself. :)
