Oreos

Hmm. You can get anything on the internet. I tried cat poop coffee (Kopi Luwak). Wasn't impressed. I have wondered what vegemite is like since I first read about it as a kid. Now I have to order some.

I think I will forgo the bucket size though.

Hmm. For a 7.76 ounce jar, Amazon is claiming one day delivery. That would mean they have to have some at the local warehouse

It's a very strong savoury flavour and a little bit goes a long way. It sort of tastes a little like beef stock and is often used in stews and soups. Traditionally it's more of a breakfast thing, vegemite on toast or on crumpets.

We were never "designed" to live past about the age of 40 yet here we are. Sanitization and vaccinations are a wonderful thing and don't deny yourself something decadent once in a while. Just don't try to live off of it.

I did get the vegemite BTW. I assume the extreme saltiness is to preserve it without refrigeration.

It certainly won't go off for a long time but that saltiness doesn't come from added salt. That's it's natural flavour.

Vegemite comes from a post war era when people couldn't afford butter and a popular snack was Bread and Dripping. Dripping is the left over fat from cooking meat, with pan juices. They'd save that for spreading on their bread and it didn't go very well with things like jam or honey.

Vegemite is made from the left over dead yeast in the bottom of beer brewing vats so it was essentially a byproduct of making beer and was very cheap to make, the very strong flavour meant that kids wouldn't plaster it thick on the bread so a jar lasted a long time. It was poor people's food for lean times but it became a regular staple that stuck with us over the years.

England has a very similar product called Marmite and when Vegemite was first created it was in direct competition with Marmite and it had a different name - Parwill. (Ma might, Pa will.)

Better off eating a box of raisins. Oreos are full of fat and sugar. I like to dunk them in my tea, but looking at how healthy people are in Italy and Spain, I feel bad when I consume high calorie junk food, knowing they live a long life from watching what they eat and drink.

Putting labels on food packaging so you can tell at a glance how good or bad they are for your health is one of things where they feel like a good idea but I think most people will end up not even paying attention to them.

What's the secret?

I'd heard from Dr Michael Mosely (recently deceased, very sad) that food has a 'bliss point' effect on the brain at around 50% sugar and 50% fat. It's why it's so easy to slip in to a hypnosis and find you've finished the packet!

I want Oreos with the double stuffing, but I can’t have that if I want to lose more weight.

Oreos. When I think of them, I think of how my mother used to grind down the cookie portion and use it as pie crust with mint chocolate ice cream as the filler.

Whew...that cookie crust combined with ice cream. Nice memories.

You know something I've never done: I have never dunked an Oreo (or any brand of sandwich cookie for that matter) in a glass of milk.

I get that it's such an accepted thing that you do with Oreos to the point where the packaging literally depicts an Oreo being dunked into a splash of milk and the slogan is 'Milk's Favorite Cookie' but I just have never done it and I refuse to do it.

Why would I want my cookie to get soggy? What benefit is there? None, I would just have a soggy Oreo if I did that.

I wonder when people say "if you restrict a certain food all you will ever think about is that food"

One therapist gave an example of Oreos. To be honest, it's not natural, it's super processed, we're not designed for Oreos!

I would rather be eating whole food carbs
Oreos have a strange, unpleasant texture.

When I was a kid I only wanted to eat potatoes.
If I could I'd have had potatoes at every meal, accompanied by milk 😂 I still can't go a day without drinking milk. I will if forced, but otherwise... milk is the best food and drink in the world. Even better than potatoes. Far better than oreos!
