PET NAMES

I kind of avoid naming animals, I dunno why but I always like to call them by their name or some description. So like cat, fat cat, black cat, or in the case of parent's Balinese cat 'fancy cat'. Naming dogs makes a little more sense to me since they respond to their name.
Cats can also respond to their names. Mine always do.

My cat is named Avalon. Also, Avvie, Miss Whiskas, Avalon-Under-Foot, and baby cat. She "adopted me" at the pound, by rolling around in ecstasy when I stopped in front of her cage. The little card on her cage said that she had been found on a porch, and that her name was Avalon, and I kept it because it made me think of golden and silver bells gently pealing on a mystical island.
and she does answer to her name!

Most of my pets have been adopted and came with names. I currently have a dog who came named Miss Lilly. Though, often I just call her Lilly. Her nicknames are Lilly-beans, Lilly-kins, Lill-bill, and as my mentor calls her, Lilly-girl.

My mum is a dog breeder and she names her dogs after mythology and folklore- Nike, Athena, Rusalka, Castiel, Jurata, Sirius, etc.
We have had dogs with other names such as Nova, Shadow, Ennis, Onyx, Ziva, and Asia.
My first dog that I remember was called Samantha or Sam for short.

From 1979 to 1982, we had a Siamese cross. (Which half? The audio half.)

The other members of my family called him Stupid. Yes, as a name. (I did not do so while he lived with us.) He was not particularly friendly or unfriendly, although he liked to sleep at the foot of my bed at night (probably because I would not disturb him). He was also very, very serious - he did not understand the concept of "play".

He left us on July 4, 1982. We think he ended up in the neighbours' moving van. They were going 500 miles away. Well, there you go.

Over the 33 years I've been on this planet, I've had a number of pets. Some have lasted longer than others. I only named a few of them myself, but I still remember all of their names.

HOPPY
This was a rabbit we had when I was still very young. I think he belonged to my older sister. I don't remember him living very long because either he or his successor got into laundry deterent from what I understand.

HOPPY II
This bunny was Hoppy's successor, and he also wasn't with us for very long. Both he and Hoppy I were mostly, if not entirely, white.

CARRIE & KELLY
This was a pair of mice my older sister was raising as part of a science project. Carrie was gray, while Kelly was black and white. I remember my dad, who did woodworking as a hobby at the time, building a maze for them to run and the two of them taking photos of them running it. Unfortunately, they both escaped afterwards because my sister wouldn't supervise them well enough when they were let out of the cage.

FREEBIE
This black dog with a white chest patch was with us for only a few months before my mother decided to get rid of him due to my sister and father not cleaning up after him when he went to the bathroom in the house. He was named Freebie because he was given to them at no cost.

SEYMORE *****
This seal point Himalayan was the first cat my family ever owned, but he was only with us for a couple years. After suffering from severe kidney obstructions after being neutered, we eventually had him euthanized. He was the only purebred cat we ever had.

MISSY
My mom's then-husband, Chris, brought this brown tabby girl home one day in the fall of 1997. I decided to name her Missy after Missy Elliott, probably due to her collaborating with one of my favorite bands at the time on a song. Chris eventually got rid of her after she had had two litters of kittens.

PRISSY
Prissy was one of Missy's first-litter kittens, and was most notable for her torbie coat and sassy meow. We didn't get much time to bond with her, as she came up missing one day. My mom believes a wild animal got her.

RITA
Rita was the cat we kept from Missy's first litter. She was a gray tabby who was smart enough to play fetch with her toy mice. She and her mother didn't get along too well after she was weaned, and her mother would attack her when she tried to use the litterbox. As a result, she would go to the bathroom where she wasn't supposed to. The eventually resulted in Chris taking her and abandoning her at some apartment complex. Rita was named after the gray Broadway singing cat from Animaniacs.

RASCAL
Rascal was a gray kitten we kept from Missy's second litter, along with one of his sisters. Unfortunately, he didn't live past kittenhood, and we found him dead on the garage floor one day. Either his mother killed him or he had licked up some chemicals and got poisoned while we were out at the store or wherever we were. My mom placed him in a shoebox casket and buried him in the back yard.

SALEM
Salem was Rascal's aforementioned sister, which my mother actually helped deliver. As her name would imply, she was black, with the exception of a white spot on her belly between her hind legs. My little sister loved her "baby girl," and was no doubt upset over her disappearance sometime in the late summer or early fall of 2000. Like Prissy, my mom thinks some sort of wild animal got her.

PATCHES
Patches was a calico cat my younger sister got as a 15th birthday present and as a replacement for Salem. She met the same fate as Rita, but I don't exactly remember why. Then again, Chris wasn't exactly the best with animals or us.

BUDDY
Buddy was an orange tabby cat my younger sister took in from the woods behind our house. My mom called him "monkey," and I wanted to call him "Rusty" after Rusty the Boy Robot. He was taken away at the same time as Patches IIRC. I don't know if it was because my sister wasn't taking care of them or because Chris was a jerk.

BALLER
This medium-haired black and white kitty was one of my biological father's cat's kittens that my little sister brought home with her. She was my little sister's "gangsta kitty" I guess since she listened to a lot of gangsta rap at the time.

EDDY
Eddy was a tabby and white kitten that Chris brought home from a coworker's farm. He probably spent the least time with us out of any pet and was taken back where he came from after only a week due to pooping outside the box.

KICKER
Kicker was a brown tabby tux cat Chris brought home in the early summer of 2005. At first, I wanted to name him Coko after the lead singer of SWV, but when I found out he was a boy, I changed his name to Kicker as a reference to the main human character from Transformers Energon. About a month after we got him, my mom finally decided to get her and myself out of the abusive relationship with Chris. Not wanting Kicker to face the same fate of so many cats before him, I decided to take him with us to live with my mother's new flame and eventual third husband, Curtis. Unfortunately, after less than two years, Curt walked out on us, forcing Mom and I to move in with my Aunt. We couldn't bring Kicker with us and were forced to leave him.

SCOOTER AKA SCOOTY, SIR BARFS-A-LOT, AND SCOOT-BOOT
Eventually, my mother would find the right guy after three failed romances. Scooter was one of his cats before we moved in, and became part of our family when we did so. I used to nerd-gasm over his name, associating it with one of the lead characters from Challenge of the GoBots despite that not being the origin of his name. To this day, Scooter is still with us. Yes, he barfs a lot.

PUCK
Puck was a tuxedo cat who also lived with my current stepdad before we moved in with him. He was a much older and more mellow cat that my stepdad rescued after he was hit by a car IIRC. In 2008, his health began to deteriorate, and in the summer of 2009, we had him euthanized.

SALEM II AKA J.R.
Salem was a cat my mom and stepdad brought home from their trip to the Bill Monroe Homestead in Rosine, Kentucky. I wanted to name her Shadow after Shadow the Hedgehog due to her being black with a white patch on her chest. My parents insisted, though, that she be named J.R. after Jerusalem Ridge. We eventually decided to shorten that down to Salem in memory of our last mostly black cat. This kitty eventually came to be my furry little roommate until she slipped out one night while I was taking out garbage and never returned.

MARIO AKA SPANKY
Mario is one of two cats my stepdad brought home one day in 2013 to fill the void left by Salem. I had had the name Mario in mind for a tabby boy for a long time due to my love of video games and status as a Super Mario World ROM hacker. I still have him to this day, but he's an outdoor cat because he can't adapt to using a litterbox.

NINJA AKA POPCORN FOOT
Ninja is the other cat my stepdad brought home along with Mario. Like the two Salems, he's mostly black, with patches of white on his chest, belly, and one two toes of one of his hind legs. My parents once mistook these white toes for a piece of popcorn, earning him the nickname Popcorn Foot. Originally, I wanted to name him Shadow, but Mom convinced me that Ninja was a cooler name. Like Mario, he's mostly an outdoor kitty because he can't adapt to using a litterbox.

I've got a black and white rescue cat that I named Chloe in early 2016 after very sadly losing my previous rescue cat Christine to cancer when she was only 8 (that devastated me). When I got to the cat sanctuary I was immediately offered her as soon as I walked through the door and she seemed to take to me. She was approx between 18 to 24 months old (according to a vet) and had lost her tail. I took her straight away and was told that they'd had her for ages and asked everyone who came whether they wanted to adopt her, but everyone else rejected her entirely because of her missing tail, E.g. to them she wasn't complete and perfect. They don't know how she lost her tail since she was picked up as a stray and they couldn't trace the owner (after a certain time they then legally go up for adoption), but since her tail was properly docked by a surgeon they suspected some sort of injury since it is illegal in the UK to dock tails on healthy animals. Her missing tail hasn't disabled her in the slightest, she still has excellent balance and can jump exactly the same as any other cat, she can also run like a bullet. Not having a tail reduces the ways she can communicate in body language as normally different tail shapes and movements communicate different things (please click here for more), but she certainly makes up for that and communicates in many other ways including by making various sounds, also she still has a couple of centimetres left of her original tail which is just enough to see a little movement when she's wagging it. In many ways not having a tail makes her different and gives her extra character and I like that. She was very lucky however as with some cats their spinal cord isn't direct and can sometimes run through the tail first before it links to the back of the body, this means that losing her tail could have paralysed the back of her body including both back legs and if that had happened she would have sadly been put to sleep before I would have had the chance to offer her a good life.

I have a dog named Sabella-Marie. Sabella is an English name and a modern variant of Isabella. Sabella means "God is my oath". Sabella-Marie got her name from my family history. The hyphen means it is one name. Sabella-Marie has three names, but we all just call her "Sabella" or "Bella". Sabella is a black Labrador Retriever. She was born July 2017.

I want to name my cats the months of the year or the days of the week. I want to name them Agatha and petunia, katja and Katherine, Freddy, or Erin and Eric.

This is Munster, my most favorite cat I've ever had. His nickname was "munster-punster". I rescued him as a tiny kitten living in the woods with other adult stray cats but he was so terrified of everyone that all his life he fully met the criteria for a PTSD diagnosis. I was the only human he would relate to. I don't know how he got there or what had happened to him. It took me 3 months of putting food out for him twice a day before I could catch him and take him home to safety. He was such a lover and so handsome. I miss him terribly.

This is Lucypurrs my current cat. She's a lounge lizard who loves to be in front of the fireplace when it's on.
