Plans for Christmas Day

Plans for Christmas Day? Not sure yet. Visiting my mom is like picking a date out at one of those circus amusements. It moves. So does the weather. & She's out of state. I might drive out to see her a few days beforehand & drive back on Christmas Day.

Our plans for paddling in the Ochopee prairie have been foiled by weather. The winter storm bomb hitting North America is pushing our sub-tropical temperatures to around freezing.

Today, it was 80F. Tonight is forecast to be 32F. That’s a drop of 48 degrees in about 12 hours.

I’ve spent much of the day hauling orchids and other plants inside. Protecting the ones too big to bring in with sheets and blankets. Depending on one or two degrees, I could lose the mango and banana crops this year. :(

Two hurricanes and a winter frost in 3 months. o_O

So, instead of paddling, we’ll stay warm inside. I will make cinnamon rolls. :)

All that is happening here so far is rain, starting to freeze guess lake effect, I guess my buddies up north an hour's drive will be snowmobiling.

I'm hosting a holiday brunch on Christmas Day. So, relatives from both sides of the family will come over. I'll make bacon, sausage, eggs, and hash browns. And the other relatives will bring pastries and drinks.

We'll open gifts and enjoy each other's company for a few hours. It should be lovely.

Not traveling as planned; took car to garage, paid garage. Now need 2nd job.
(Just kidding! They did good work & were very reasonably priced.)

After church, we'll come home and I'll make a fancier-than-usual dinner. But since it's just the two of us, I'm not going to make turkey; instead, I bought swordfish steaks for Christmas Day and tuna steaks for New Year's.

I have never made either of these before. It should be fun!

Waking up early & going to Mass with the family, going to see my grandmother.
My brother already knows what his present is, and I think Dad's already quite fond of the present I gave him--
Other items on agenda for Christmas Day:
--listen to carols on radio, sing badly (probably)
--relax & do some handsewing
--telephone some of my friends
--see what happens
--dig up a bunch of old carol records & play the gramophone
--help fix a nice dinner (I've already been doing some baking)
--probably go for a walk

No idea what actually happens but I hope it all goes well. It's not like we do high-pressure holidaymaking here.

I'm having a great day. It's Saturday afternoon here now, and the whole world has gone quiet. It's almost like the calm before a storm, that feeling of waiting for something to happen.

I'm looking forward to tomorrow morning. The weather is going to be a very pleasant 32 degrees and I will have the city almost to myself.

Originally I was just going to sit around and play Retro Gadgets, but I got invited to a Christmas dinner party and I can't turn down free ham!

No pressure on you, but I have been looking forward to seeing/reading about what you see on Christmas morning since you mentioned it. I hope you have an intriguing day on the quiet streets.

Christmas is celebrated on December 24th here, not the 25th, so it's right now actually. I won't do much today, as little as possible and just enjoy Christmas.

I have been thinking, because we celebrate on the 24th here, it would be clever to go to the US early tomorrow. There's a 7 hour time difference so you get the travel time back. You leave Norway at 8am and land in the US around 9am. So you can get two Christmases. Double up on everything. :D

I'm looking forward to it too. I still haven't decided wether to ride my bike or catch the train. I'm leaning towards the train, after I've finished in the city I could go to the beach and wet my toes a little.

Are you sure this isn’t you just up to your old tricks of elongating holidays into two days instead of one?

Oh crap, they are on to me... ;)

No, this is not my idea. It's just other countries doing Christmas wrong, it should be celebrated on the 24th like we do. :) The 25th is the big "doing absolutely nothing besides eating leftovers on the couch and watch tv" day.

In the afternoon I will be driving to Banff with two friends, where we will attempt to find a nice supper (it worked back in 2019, without booking a restaurant), just hang out otherwise, check out some Christmas lights in town...

We did basically the same thing in 2019, the last non-Covid Christmas, and it worked out :)

To us that's Boxing Day on the 26th. Happy Box. :)

In Canada, Boxing Day (and the week following) was traditionally when the biggest sales of the year would be held and everyone would flock to the malls and they would be absolutely packed.

However, since the mid-late 2000s, Black Friday (day after American Thanksgiving) has been gradually introduced into the Canadian retail scene, and by the mid-2010s, it was solidly entrenched, so now there's two major sales events.

This is exactly what my grandson does. Celebrates Christmas Eve with his mother’s family in Sweden and then hops on a plane to California to celebrate with his father.

He’s been doing this since he was a very young child. (As in, I would never put a toddler on a plane alone, but I guess unaccompanied minors are well watched after.) He is 13 now.
