As I was feeling particularly random this morning, I thought I would post the weirdest and most random/surreal comedy troupe I was ever in contact with (I have an album of theirs that is signed by all four members). That would be The Firesign Theatre: four fellows who were all born in months considered to be fire signs.
I first became aware of their beginnings in college when two of the members had a regular radio show on a local public radio station (KPFK) called Radio Free OZ. There they used current events as sources of comedy. For instance: they broadcast a show covering the Tierra del Fuego Mud Games while the Summer Olympics was in progress. Of course their events were strange and random, such as uphill mud skiing. They also broadcast the entire soundtrack of a movie playing at a local art house and described random visuals to go along with the audio (they were miles away in the radio studio and not watching the film at all).
I any event, the two guys responsible for Radio Free OZ added a couple of their friends and wound up with a recording contract with Columbia Records.
Admittedly, you either get their comedy or you do not, and as much of it was topical their references might be somewhat obscured by time. At any rate, here is a link to a video (shot after the release of the album) where they tried to translate their work to a less familiar medium with varying success.
Just remember this: It's in the water; that's why it's yellow.
