Purpose.

What is recognized as "Purpose," is just biochemical electrical impulses in an organism. When volcano at pompei erupted, was its purpose to kill all those roman villagers? how is there purpose in a cloud. An inanimate object cannot have purpose. It's purpose is to transport water? It's one thing to appreciate aesthetics of something. But why ascribe purpose to inanimate things. Unless you believe in animism. That when rock rolls down a hill, it did it "on purpose". And then you could apply that to the universe it self. Which gets into the realm of 'intelligent design.'

All of human history, is just impulses, emotions, fears, joys, pleasure & pain, operant conditioning, instinctual drives. The more intellectual humans, used rationality, logic, mathematics and constructed modern civilization. The more brutal humans kept it in check, perpetuating it through armies, conquests, propaganda.
Yes. The Volcano at Pompeii had purpose. Remember what I said about the what ifs. The Romans killed by it may have changed history in any number of ways. By action, choices, inventions, and descendants.
This Volcano also caused thousands to flee. Settling in other places. Meeting people they wouldn't have prior had the Volcano not erupted. Along with the lost resources of that city. Which had an impact temporary though it may have been. Which lead to some other event happening.
And yes inanimate objects have purpose. A certain rock forms a million years ago. It moves place to place by wind and water.
Million year passes. A wars being fought. Soldiers rush forward. The rock trips one saving his life from bullets. He gets up runs forward. Gets killed. The rock saved his life. Gaining him a few more minutes before he died. To accomplish a purpose.

What is the purpose of everything that IS?

Yet somehow everything came from nothing to something and from no beginning to no end.
I can't explain it. But, there must be a reason. Reason and consciousness create.
For some purpose?
Sigh, the philosophy of it all is amazing.

Still studying that. But, there is a plan. That much I can say.
And yes the philosophy is.

Everything has it. Everything. Not one thing doesn't. The shape of the ground. Position of the clouds. Trees and grass growing where they grow. And people. Even medical conditions. All have purpose. It's truly amazing.:eek:

Conversation piece if anyone wants too.

Where you see purpose, I see mechanics and systems interacting.

Where you wonder "Whys", I wonder "Hows".

I still get the same amazing feeling when staring at nature.

I dont consider humans to be that important to be the center of the universe purposes or plans. I just find 3 important things about humans in the context of life in earth:
  • We are a mass extintion agent.
  • We have the potential to bring earth life to other places.
  • We have the potential to create an earth God as a IA that will decipher all DNA secrets and reshape itself in a living form that will take control over earth life.
Even if I think diferently to you, I am glad that you shared your view with us. Probably we are both wrong. Universal truth is evasive for our limited brains. :)

Man made objects are generally extensions of our selves. E.g. Telescope = Eyesight. Can see further. Even into Infra red and ultraviolet.
They have no other purpose than to extend our capacities beyond their natural limit.
A gun is simply the extension of our killing ability. Knife cuts better than teeth. I can crush bone with a baseball bat. I can lacerate you with gun. With my fists all I can do his bruise you or scratch you. Just like all those construction site vehicles and tools are just mere mechanical extension of our muscles. That is all it is, an extension of our power.

Natural objects, say earth metals, have no intrinsic purpose, it's just random matter, only when utilised by us, and incorporated into our plans. It becomes a bullet. A trees only "purpose ", if you can call it that, as living thing is to grow, survive and perpetuate its form.

Like I said, I believe purpose is a byproduct of consciousness ,and does not exist outside of it.

We are very important, because we are the most complex life form we know. This is just cosmic self-deprecation. For thousands of years religion posited man as supremely important and center of creation, so some decide to go the absolute opposite route and become scientific atheists.

Extinction seems to be a result of overpopulation and a conquering of nature ideology that has driven civilization. Animals routinely go extinct. This is nothing new to humans.

Transhumanist believe we can replace nature with technology. They've been predicting the singularity event for decades now. Like the Matrix. Where we create a AI Frankenstein God that takes over the world. Sure, in the future, we might colonize planets. This might be our natural evolutionary trajectory and how the universe works. Sowing the seeds for life through the galaxies. Cosmic battle for survival, between competing alien races. Very Star Wars/Star Trek. That's all something that we will never see in our lifetimes though. So it doesn't really matter. All very speculative. A sci-fi fantasy.

Other way around as I have come to understand it. The universe, Earth, all seem to be created to form us from it's materials.
Along with the resources required to sustain us. And the technology built by us. To a point in time.

Not quite. Remember natural disasters do have purpose. As history reveals. Then remember metals and soil untouched by man has an effect on man. Radioactive, chemical, and in other ways. Unknown to man. Changing society and history by simply existing.
