i can relate to, i've never lived on my own either, however i have been a licensed car driver since i was 18, but the only jobs i've had in my life are entry-level jobs or dead-end jobs, or jobs that are not considered real career professional jobs, such as a grocery store, restaurant, retail, warehouse.I actually am unemployed but had enough left from my past retail job to pay for the certificate level training. I am hoping to be able to get an introductory level job in a field I enjoy. I don't have a driver's liscense and have never lived on my own ( I'm still with my parents. )
But struggling to live independently i think is quite common for people on the autism spectrum, heck, i think even research and modern times have confirmed that in the 21st century, its more common for people than ever before to live with their folks later than in previous decades, or taking much longer to leave the nest, autism or not.
