BATON ROUGE - Police accused a Walker man recently of raping a 19-year-old woman who suffers from Asperger's syndrome, which investigators said leaves her vulnerable to people taking advantage of her.

Detectives charged 49-year-old Ron Monroe with rape and sexual battery for the incident, which investigators said happened on Oct. 30.

Police said they were told by the victim's mother that Monroe had been doing repairs at their home for months when he raped the teen. Police said Monroe also took nude pictures of the girl, and refused to listen to the teen when she told him to stop.

Detectives said the teen's condition leaves her uneducated about the social aspects of sexuality and at risk for being victimized.

Police booked Monroe into the East Baton Rouge Parish jail, where he was given a $60,000 bond.

I know firsthand what it's like not to know how to draw the line when someone's attentions become inappropriate. It happened a lot when I was younger. I couldn't tell the difference between appropriate dating behavior and someone trying to take advantage. I wouldn't say I was "uneducated" though. I had lots of input from family and teachers about how to stay safe, but their suggestions didn't always work, and I didn't know what to do / say next. Obviously, one does what this girl did, which is to ask the person to stop. But if they don't listen? Sometimes it's hard to know what to do when your "education" only goes so far, and you have to rely on social judgement that isn't intuitive for you.

I remember calling my mother to ask if I could come home from college after I had been assaulted. Her response? "How could you be so stupid? After all we taught you about how to be safe..." I hung up the phone, I didn't know why I was being blamed.

We're not "uneducated"... it's just that even the best education sometimes falls short of supplying us with the skills to identify and get out of a dangerous situation.

Glad this man won't get away with it though. My abuser did get away, because the cop interrogating me treated me like I was just some scared slut who didn't want to be responsible for her poor judgment, and escorted me out when I went into meltdown mode.

If someone did that to some one I loved they'd get a note with one word RUN...the police like to tell you they protect you ...but most of the time they can hardly be bothered to show up and pretend to scribble a few notes.

CAN ASPERGERS SUFFERERS SAY "YES" AND "NO" IN THE "AFFIRMATIVE" ??? WOULD APPRECIATE AN ANSWER OF ANY KIND...THANKS ...PETE

It depends on the level of functioning.

Some people are verbal and can say 'yes' or 'no.'
Some can write it.
Some can point.
