Are you a fan? Do you prefer more linear stories like the Final Fantasy series, or ones with more freedom like Skyrim?

I prefer the classic linear RPGs like Final Fantasy (1, 4, 6, & 7), Earthbound (one of the funniest games ever), Super Mario RPG, Chrono Trigger, & even the 1st Pokemons Red, Blue, & Yellow. I played Skyrim, but it was too big for it's own good. I don't know if this counts, but I love the Zelda series.

I love RPGs! But not having a Sony console has made me miss out on Final Fantasy and stuff.

I love a good story and characters more than anything else in a game, so if they're solid, I don't care if the gameplay is minimal. (It still has to be decent, though.)

I love Zelda, too, but I'm not sure what category it falls into. I remember that games like Ocarina of Time and A Link to the Past gave a little more freedom than some other games, but there was still a clear path forward and quite a few blocked areas (and I spent a lot of time looking for the most indirect route possible!).

You want freedom & a little weird but still a good Zelda game Licorice, try the game that came after Ocarina, Majora's Mask. It had only 4 dungeons, but a lot of side quests. You repeated the same 3 days over & over so you have to remember what every NPC characters did to get items, masks & pieces of heart.

I remember trying Majora's Mask when it was new, but I don't think I was able to play for more than a few hours before my copy was lost. That's a good idea!

I think one of the bonuses to the Zelda franchise in the newer titles is the addition of more complex puzzles. The last one I played was Phantom Hourglass, and it was much harder than the SNES title.

I love Final Fantasy - I'm on my first playthrough of FFXIII - I'd got so used to playing the classics over and over again that it's nice to play through one that's new to me, not knowing what's gonna happen next, not knowing exactly how to beat all the bosses etc. I really don't understand why people are so overly critical about FFXIII. It's heavily criticised for things that apparently didn't matter in previous games in the series >_<

I also really like the Zelda series, and tried Earthbound, Chrono Trigger and some of the original Pokemon games, but haven't really played many others. My brother got me to start playing Borderlands recently too - Not sure if I'd really class it as an RPG though.

Polar opposites.

Firmly planted in reality or at least plausible.

Or

Totally non plausible and complete fiction.

That bit in the middle I don't really get into.

I like RPG's for it's vastness and the creativity of worldbuilding that comes with it.

Final fantasy is one of those games I never got into. I've heard they are supposed to be really good, but there's some aspect of it that just doesn't appeal to me.

On the other hand, first person RPG's like Fallout New vegas I've spent a lot of time on (and then there's Fallout 3, Borderlands and then some). I never tried Skyrim, and I'm not sure if I should, considering everyone says it's really big. I've already spent a silly amount of time on the previous installment in that series years ago. I'm not a fan of "high fantasy" settings in general, though I can't even start counting all the hours I spent on Diablo 2 when it came out years ago. Perhaps for nostalgia sake I should give Diablo 3 a try though, but like I said, it's not my thing in general.

I'm more of a PC gamer, so any console only RPG's kinda get lost on me. Zelda seems to be good, but I just can't get myself to play an RPG on a console. But then again, Zelda never appealed to me ever since it's inception back on the old NES.

Pokemon, I've played on my handheld, perhaps that's an exception (as far as non-pc gaming goes) since it's easy on the go. And it's Pokemon; I play the cardgame from time to time as well.

So while I like RPG's I'm quite picky on both the system I'm playing on as well as the setting. I tend to be more into post-apocalyptic stuff rather than fantasy stuff.

And then there's pen and paper RPG's... I like them and flip through the books for it, just for all the background stuff. I can't get myself to sit down regularly with people to actually play.

Ive been immersed in Bravely Default. Its Final Fantasy by another name. There are a few minor irks with it, but it is a spectacular game.

I've just looked ant some clips on youtube - that seems more faithful to the early final fantasy games than the current final fantasy games are ^_^

I don't know. The same reason Voltorb is okay but Trubbish isn't, I guess.

Is FFXIII single player? I drifted right around the time there were multiplayer games being released.

must've forgotten to reply to this - FFXIII is single player. It's FFXI and XIV that were multiplayer.

One of the things FFXIII is criticised for is how you spend a lot of time walking along a linear path meaning there's pretty much no exploration - FFX was exactly the same and nobody criticised it for that, as far as I can remember.. maybe people were too busy complaining about the voice acting ;)
