I use subtitles in my own language because I usually can't understand everything someone is saying, especially when it's scripted or jump-cut a million times over.

I will say that having to read subtitles otherwise (versus dubbed movies) really makes my brain hurt and I'm not sure why
 
Sometimes I like using subtitles for a language that I am studying as a means of learning. Other times I will test different languages subtitles just to see what they are like. I also usually use subtitles in my own language to watch movies on my phone so I can leave the sound off since no one is watching the movie with me.
