I'll use them for foreign films or if the music is louder that speech (an issue these days) or if my wife is sleeping and I have to turn volume way down.

Sometimes I'll watch dubbed but it is not the same words.
Yeah. Irritates the heck out of me that in order to hear what is being said, I have to turn up the volume and then something "dramatic" happens with music or loud action and I get blasted. Or the TV goes to a commercial, and you can hear it next door.
 
I use subtitles in my own language because I usually can't understand everything someone is saying, especially when it's scripted or jump-cut a million times over.

I will say that having to read subtitles otherwise (versus dubbed movies) really makes my brain hurt and I'm not sure why
