Teen Movie Reviews Please

Yeshuasdaughter

You know, that one lady we met that one time.

I'm a little more conservative than my parents were in what we watch in the house. I think a few of the movies I used to watch would be fun or inspirational for my daughter, but I don't feel comfortable having full nudity/ sex scenes, or extreme bloody gore on tv at home when we're watching something together.

I can't really remember which movies were good from when I was a kid.

If you know a good teen movie, please let me know.

Also, if any 80s or 90s movies are boring, outdated, and corny, or just not worth the watch, please let me know.

Just a quick potential resource for you:

DoesTheDogDie.com

It's sorta what it sounds like; go to a page for a movie/whatever and you can see what potentially triggering/problematic things might be in it. It does its best to remain spoiler free, but it's quite specific as to exactly what is in there. It's one of those sites that is maintained by users and such, so things that are very niche or not well known might have limited info.

I remember really liking Mi Vida Loca, La Bamba, Lean on Me, Interview With The Vampire, Braveheart, and The Lost Boys, among others.

Normal movie violence, or some romance, or even really quick nudity is tolerable, but super adult themes or gore are something I'm not okay with for my teen.

I can't really remember if these movies were like that. If you remember the plot and details, can you give me a little movie review below?

Psychologically how mature is she?I saw a company of wolves at 15, which was rated 18 in the UK, it's definitely not a nice cosy children's story, but I like some fantasy, a lot of what I saw was for adults ,reservoir dogs (never ever encourage her to see that at any age)
I like some of the music from St Elmos fire but it was too American(some nudity ,very slightly pornographic) im not in love with everything English ,im very autistic ,liked some of the breakfast club but I didn't attend a high school so it doesn't mean the same ,I attended a state school then a private (public)school everyone wears uniforms in the UK ,apart from charity days, where you are sponsored for a particular charity, but that's only the last 15 years or so.
The inn of the sixth happiness is sort of interesting, but the main character was not liked by the actual person it was inspired! by but it shows you the class system in England so a sort of history lesson, then the history of a small region of China in the 1930s-40s

I used to love "The Company of Wolves" when I was a teen! It's too dark and full of inuendo for my taste now. Not critiquing the movie, I've just changed - but it was cool to see that someone else remembers that movie! Maybe they should do a remake, with better special effects.

I think Night Shyamalan's movies can be interesting and kind of freaky, but not too much gore - I don't think there's any nudity or sex, but I haven't seen them all.

I think I remember "Interview with the Vampire" having some gore, for sure - but I can't remember anything else.

This is not in that genre at all, but the cleanest movie I have seen that I still thought was great quality was "Quiz Show", based on true events of how America first lost its trust in television. Random, I know. But I loved that movie.

For romance, I really liked "The Age of Innocence". That was my favorite book by my favorite author and my favorite actor played my favorite character.

There's always the BBC version of "Pride and Prejudice" - in which Colin Firth became a worldwide heart-throb.

And "Jane Eyre" with Ruth Wilson that was shown on Masterpiece Theater in the US - my husband and I have watched that one several times, we love it.

For me it was freedom from terrible reality, there's Erin Brockovich it's based on truth but again the reality is, no one appreciates the work that's done to help them ,if the worker is paid for the work ,apparently any involved in law should be a nun or priest and be beholden and poverty stricken,it's definitely a lesson about capitalisms strangle hold on the financially poor.
The song at the end is a relief.

“Time Bandits” is good from 4-104 in age. I never get enough of that movie. Stars a boy I’d guess around 8 or 9 but the whole movie is actually history so you learn something and it’s the force of evil against good and good wins. Happy movie all around and I still find it entertaining.

I LOVE JANE EYRE!!!!

I LOVE JANE EYRE!!!!
Ha - I am obsessed with Jane Eyre, have been ever since we read it in high school.:) I think I have watched every movie/series based on it, but my favorite is definitely the Masterpiece Theater one, there's something timeless about it. It wasn't how I pictured Mr. Rochester, but the actor brought humor to the role that I would never have imaged before.

My favorite Jane Eyre literary posters:

Some I remember back then that I liked as a teen besides the Lost Boys one you mentioned were:

Dead Poet Society
The Boy Who Could Fly
Stand By Me
Big
What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Ferris Buellers Day Off
St. Elmo's Fire
The Breakfast Club

Swing Kids
Flatliners
Hamlet
Dead Again
Howards' End
Last of the Mohicans

When I was a teen I loved everything Monty Python, too

I would avoid Interview with a Vampire, because one of the main characters is a pre adolescent girl who is turned into a vampire; causing her body to stop maturing while her mind matures to adulthood, which leads to some sexual conflict in the latter part of the movie.

I agree that Time Bandits is fun for many reasons.

I would suggest "To all the Boys I've Loved Before". It is about a girl who writes love letters to boys she admires and a few of them get inadvertently mailed, causing her problems. The movie was adapted from a YA novel by a woman and directed by a woman, speaking directly to some of things teen girls experience growing up. It has some mild sexual content that you might object to, as I cannot project myself into your headspace, as well as some mild profanity. Anyway, it is a 2018 Netflix movie, so it is very current, and the book was a NYT best seller. I enjoyed it, but I am only suggesting not recommending. It sounds like you are a parent that is concerned for her daughter's welfare and I applaud that.

Any version of Freaky Friday is Fun, and there are many, because the trope revolves around a parent swapping bodies with their child. I am partial to the 1976 version, with a young Jodie Foster as the daughter, although the 2003 version with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan has its fun moments too.

I could probably go on and on, for film is one of my major areas of focus, but I have offered some choices to consider and I do not want to ramble on and bore others to tears, which is my want if left unchecked.

Good luck!

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the movie so I’m not sure how clean it is but remember it to be clean? Maybe someone else knows about “Steel Magnolias”, it’s a chick flick and I remember enjoying the movie. I won’t watch dirty talk or violence in movies so it may be okay?

Funny to think of all the R- and even X-rated films I saw as a teen in the 70s. By the time I graduated high school there wasn't anything "taboo" enough for my parents to avert my eyes. :p

I still remember seeing "Carnal Knowledge" at age 16. Way over my head, but I did like seeing so much of Ann Margret. But then seeing such films by myself was easy as I always looked older than I actually was. Still do today as well.

Though personally I find the 80s teen comedy "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" to be timeless, and relatively harmless other than hearing some profanities that most teens probably hear most every day. No worries, everything works out for Ferris' BFF Cameron, who later becomes a starship captain getting pointers from James T. Kirk.

When I reincarnate I want to come back as Ferris Bueller. Sure beats "Westworld", where nothing really does go wrong for Ferris.

did you watch ripping yarns?I like the scene in the curse of the claw ,Monty pythons flying circus and movies are very double entendre, nudge ,nudge ,wink, wink, say no more, but I find that uninteresting.
My mam(mom)loved the scene where a school boy gets up and the house is empty ,there is a note saying 'we left you are boring', I find it sort of unhingedly funny ,but also strange.
