The washer & dryer

A whole bunch of falsehoods & hyperbole about slave labour & exploitation. It'll probably stop in front of the nearest Catholic church screaming, "SANCTUAIRE!!!"

Apparently over here it's quite common for people to own at least a washing machine and eventually a dryer as well. Can't imagine me doing my stuff without it. It's on of the "bigger" expenses I probably have to make when I move out.

In my area we don't even have public laundromats, so it's either having them yourself, or wash by hand... quite sure I'll rather buy a machine, lol.

On a related note; conversation between me and my mom earlier today when I was loading the washing machine.

Me, coming back from the shed to fetch a new bag of detergent to put in the washing machine, running into my mom, my mom says "I already put the fabric softener in".
I'm heading over to the washing machine to put detergent in and look at the settings. So my mom tells me "no, the settings are fine".
Me: "Oh? It's on setting 5... what does setting 5 do?"
My mom: "that's for when laundry is dirty"
Me: "What's setting 4 for then? I take it you don't put clothes in if they're not dirty... it's a washing machine for crying out loud".
My mom: *blank stare*

To me, perfect logic. If there's setting 5, there is setting 1 through 4... what's the difference, and how does this affect my laundry?

Update on Rube's dryer saga...

I finally opened the thing and examined the components:

I haven't tested the components with a meter, but I'm pretty sure I know what it is:

This temperature sensor is burned out. I change this sensor before, like 2 years ago. Is a $15 bucks part I believe... available on amazon me thinks.

Nifty! I've never seen a washing machine's guts before: I feel kind of like that masked lunatic in the Scream movies!

As for modern washing machines, they've got....issues. Mine has a 'pre-wash' setting-so you can wash your clothes before you actually wash them (who does this?). You can select cold water OR tap-cold water: where does the first kind of cold water come from? Does the machine suck it in from the Arctic? You can even delay when the machine starts so you can wash you clothing some other time instead of just waiting until that predetermined time & doing your wash then. Some of the cycles seem scary like 'speed wash': in case you're washing away evidence after having committed a horrendous crime & you can hear police sirens in the distance! Maybe you use that one when you've got something embarrassing on your clothing (like dog poop) & you don't want anyone to find out.

I finally fixed the thing. Got the part on a local shop, installed and I'm drying some clothes now. I feel pretty good. I like the feeling of fixing stuff.
