Thinking of quitting my job.

Maybe ask for a sit down with boss and ask about a week on and a week remote. Then you and her get a workable schedule. Maybe a little compromise?

What did you do while you rode along?
Sleep?
Listen to audio books?
Eat?
What?
I nap while I am on the bus, but the real killer is having to wait for a bus transfer for 45 minutes downtown, in a rather unsafe part of the city. Earlier I only had to wait five minutes.

OK, so I talked with my boss and we now have an agreement. I am showing up at the office every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Tuesdays and Thursdays I will work remote. And I will give her a report of all I have done at the end of every shift instead of just giving her a large number at the end of the month like I have been doing.

I think I will also set aside a few dollars every day I have to go into the office so I can enjoy a coffee inside the safety of Starbucks instead of standing outside at the bus stop being surrounded by heroin addicts for 45 minutes.

I have to keep in mind that bus service will most likely be restored eventually. They are already doing a mass hiring of new drivers currently. Once it gets restored to its former level, the commute will be much easier on me.

Wow, some things to say:

@Metalhead Im happy that you are not quitting without having a better job. I am also happy that you have a better point of view about your job. And you did very well getting some Home Office days. Now you need to work way better from Home Office than at office so your boss see by herself that you are best used at home.:D

Also, many companies in USA and developed countries are facing what is called "The Big Resignation" so many oportunities are there waiting for you to work from home, this is a very good chance to knock some doors to see what they can offer to you. Salaries and working conditions (including doing home office) have improved in the last year. Here you have more info: Great Resignation - Wikipedia

Its never a bad idea to know how much the work market is offering you.

@Misery The thing with Office vs Home Office is not always about performance or results, its about corporate culture. Many corporations do have a face to face culture, and if some people keep working from home when most of them are on the face to face thing is like they are "out of the group" and will get ignored. Its a social thing. I see that in the company I work. We have all the tools to work from home, the performance of my department increased in Home Office mode, I did the stadistics, got the results, but nobody wanted to even talk about it. It was everybody at home or everybody back at work. I finally understood what was going on talking with some directives. Many companies social relations are like tribes, so the same principles apply.

About the time traveling to work: This time may be loss or not depending of what we do in that time. If you use that time to advance in your hobbie/proyects, or to read something usefull or to listen a podcast/audiobook that will have a good impact on your life, then that time is not lost. Its actually a very useful time. I spend about 2.5 hours driving every working day. Most of that time I listen to podcasts/audiobooks so I learn something satisfiying/usefull every day.

@Sarah S At my work they are surprised that I take people from university with no experience, I do my own HR tests and exams, I train myself those people I choose and I get them to do incredible quality job well beyond of my company standards, with lower payment and less resignations rates. They just dont understand it. I am pretty sure that at least 2 of my workers are on the spectrum (of course my company would not be able to see the difference from an autists and an NT). All of this has been done personally by me, at Mexico. I am sure that in develop countries you will find more (and better) opportunities if you search for them. The world have many nice people in leading possitions (and we need more). Dont lose hope.

I know I am very repetitive with books, this audiobook changed my way of seeing work and I recomend it to any of you who are experiencing problems in that field: https://www.amazon.com/-/es/Earl-Nightingale/dp/0743520815

If you are short of money, you can find it for free at youtube and other sites.

Best of luck for all of you who are dealing with difficult jobs situations. Hugs.

I would not quit my job, but would start looking for another job. People who share your employer’s point of view are stupid considering (1) COViD has gone away, (2) transportation costs have increased dramatically due to the war in Ukraine, and (3) you are obviously able to work remotely without losing productivity. In fact research studies have shown that people who work virtually tend to do more work than office workers. Your boss makes no sense.

There are always going to be micromanage bosses and hands-off bosses. The remote work opportunities are best served by the latter style.

I work and also get SSI. Otherwise I would still be living with my parents.
I think having a job is a good idea if you want to be able to have any freedom to spend your money how you would like (on hobbies/special interests.)
I’m glad you were able to work something out with your boss!

That's good you worked it out. Being able to put money in a rainy day fund is better than squeaking by. Most everyone has had to put up with some crap involving work and almost every anecdote I have about telling an employer to piss up a rope and quitting or being fired came with a price on the back end.

Well, I got a venti mocha this morning during my wait downtown. I had the barista put a couple of extra shots into it since I wanted to spend more time in bed this morning and I had to force myself to get up, shower, get dressed and leave for the office. I think this will be a nice habit for me to develop, at least until bus service gets restored to what it used to be. I am a caffeine junkie, who is actively avoiding the heroin junkies, but we all need our fix.

That sounds great. Maybe rewarding yourself for the bus ride? Like this idea. I use rewards to do things like renewing my tag for my car, dreaded car appointments and so on.

My boss just handed me a massive project that does not involve making cold calls. I am now grateful for that.

So you decided to carry on with what you were doing? I would have tried to do something you enjoy. So many people are stuck in low paying jobs, they hate. And they don't even think to decide to change to something better.
