What are your feelings about Valentine's Day?

It is another typical sign of the disgrace commercialism has brought to us as free-thinking and feeling humans.. but many are so subconsciously affected by the pervasive atmosphere of such gimmicks every day, throughout their lives, that it's 'part of the culture' now and therefore arguably essential as a social lubricant..
I'd rather it were not so myself.. and a potential partner might agree.. or not, that's up to them though and, as such, it would be my responsibility to respect 'their culture' as I'd respect their beliefs. :rolleyes::)

I think it's a day like any other, it all depends on each person perception of love and romance as for me, I'm not a romantic person and I feel weary of people so I ostracise my self a little bit
 
Aspie married female, 40 years old. It's just another day, and my husband (who has Aspie traits but has never been diagnosed) feels the same. He usually feels pressured by society to get me chocolates that day, which I feel obligated to eat, but I'm usually on a diet so it annoys me to have to eat them (I would never let him know that).

Personally I get very annoyed at the way my children are required (by society - the teachers say they don't have to but there's peer pressure) to bring a valentine for each classmate. When I was in school, kids gave valentines to their gf/bf only. Now it's expected that kids bring 30 valentines for all of their classmates. Which is stupid to me. It's a day to celebrate romantic love - not school friendship. Ugh.

Valentine's Day makes me feel sad because it brings my attention to the people I have loved and lost, because they couldn't deal with my Asperger's traits. I am happy for people who have love in their lives, and I do in some measure, but it still makes me feel sad. I will not ever attempt a romantic relationship again...too much pain and complication.
 
I hate Valentine's Day. I'm either alone or dating someone while thinking nonstop that the relationship probably won't work out anyway because of all my problems. In which case I'd go back to being alone for the following Valentine's Day. Then there's just the fact that it's a commercial holiday used to empty ppls pockets and wallets and has no real meaning.

I'm an Aspie female. Honestly, I'm extremely terrified of someone asking me out or giving me flowers or something. I really am not interested in dating someone, but I know because I "look" normal they will take it as a rejection because I don't like them, when really it's just me.
 
Aspie female. Sometimes I like it, it can bring a little fun into an otherwise dull month. However this year we have just returned from a vacation abroad and I'm more interested in saving our money to make up for the trip :) Boyfriend did offer to cook me my favorite food though for a romantic dinner at home, now I just have to figure out what I want to eat!
 
I HATE Valentine's Day!! Why? Because I' m a 27-year-old female who -- I'm told -- is very good-looking, and I've never had a boyfriend. It's very depressing.
 
I dislike all holidays, including birthdays, unless they represent something "monumental". July 4 and, maybe, Thanksgiving. But even Thanksgiving isn't worthy of "special" status. No b-days. I dont celebrate mine and I don't think the country should celebrate a president's. Memorial Day is only other day I think should be considered a "real holiday". No religious ones, as not all folks are religious. New Year's is ridiculous, cause a year from Jan 1 to Jan 1 is exactly the same as from June 3 to June 3, someone just happened to start the calendar on whatever day he did.

Valentines is just another meaningless day with no ties to anything important, no relevance to what is happening in society, and makes folks that want, but dont have or cant get, a "valentine', feel like sh!t, I imagine, and so is actually kinda a "dikc move" day.

A better way to do it would be to say, "okay, no more feb 14. Everyone/couple pick your own day and then celebrate valentines that day.". Makes it more personal, removes that "one day" a year that needlessly hurts some folks, removes the lame commercialization of it, etc, etc...

You say, but wait, what about kids in school. Well, the last holiday kids in school should be playin with is valentines. I remember some kids were SO upset when that day came, even before card sharing began. Cause they knew they were getting nothin.

It is a stupid "fn holiday", which makes it a stupid fn holiday.
 
It hasn't affected me for many years as I have been single. I am puzzled this year as received a Valentine's card from someone I just split up with. I feel I should be annoyed but actually feel warm inside even though no intention of getting back with him.
 
I used to DESPISE Valentine's day, because I was single for so long and didn't appreciate being reminded of it. Now I just ignore it. It seems a silly day to celebrate, just like all the other commercialized so called holidays. If you are loved and you love back, it's good all year. If you are alone, just be extra nice to yourself(especially if there have been to many simpering Happy Valentine's Day comments hurled at you.)

And no, I don't care if my husband recognizes Valentines day or not. Just yesterday I had a rough medical appointment, and told him that nothing would cheer me up more than a chocolate binge. So we bought some chocolate and sat in the car and ate it. I didn't have to wait for Valentine's day for that! As far as I am concerned, this meant more to me than waiting for some artificial reason to express love with chocolate! We don't do Christmas either, and for birthdays the person who has the birthday gets to pick a nice restaurant to go to.
 
The closest person I have to a girlfriend is someone on PlentyOfFish and she claims she's busy this Valentine's Day. I've never really celebrated it with a girlfriend before.
 
I want to take one of my kids for a haircut and a movie. We'll see if it works out. So that's my plan :) but honestly, the best Valentine's day present would be Blackhawks winning again :)
 
Aspie female here.

I never mined Valentines day. Whenever I didn't have a special someone, I just made it a me day. ^^;
 
I wouldn't have known that it is Valentine's Day, except I saw a post about it on Facebook a few hours ago.

You know what? I know that Aspies don't acknowledge certain holidays, but when someone wishes you a Happy Valentines Day it is nice to say it back. It hurt me for my Aspie friend to completely ignore my Valentine text. I'm just not going to acknowledge any holidays anymore.
 
On Valentine's day I watch all the men rushing into Tesco after work grabbing a bunch of flowers which are conveniently placed in a large display as you walk in, and then rush off down the aisles to grab a card that will need to be filled in with words of undying love as long as they can find a pen.Then they will be seen with a box of reasonably priced chocolates or/and an equally inexpensive bottle of wine, after all,
They've just spent a small fortune on the flowers!
Then you will see them hurrying out of the store content in the knowledge that they have bought their partners love and devotion for another year.
To me this sums up Valentine's day, ok if you are young and just starting out with dating, but not when you are in a steady relationship, because then it becomes a yearly ritual that everyone takes part in just so Tesco and every other retailer can increase profits .

you may think I'm a miserable twat and maybe I am, but I love my wife of 30 years and I don't need to be told when I have to show my love for her! So there!
