WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN STRESSED?

When I get stressed my belly hurts and doesn't stop until I settle down. Someone told me that when your upset, there's more acid in your stomach. I don't know about that, but sure does hurt.

You might do well to see a gastroenterologist

Ok, you know I can't just let this one go. Grumpy Cat is curious about a few things since you're being a little vague:

Is this new? Where does it hurt? Burning, cramping, stabbing pain? Do you vomit or have blood in the stool? And it only happens when under stress - not any other time?

I have problem with GERD. I take omeprazole(generic prylosec) for it. When I'm under a lot of stress it feels just like it does if I forget to take my meds. I think it is acid because a shot of Pepto seems to help. I have very old stomach.

I used to have GERD. The solution for me was so illogical, that I don't ever recommend it for anyone. I almost suspect the recovery was a coincidence. Anyway, I tried the purple pill before my illogical solution, I think it was nexium, and it was better for me than prilosec...

Some patients have GERD so bad that they have to take higher doses of meds and have to take it twice a day. (Check with doctor to see about a dosage increase.) Also an EGD might be in order just to make sure nothing else is going on like ulcers - especially since you said you're having pain.

I'm probably going to wish I hadn't asked, but what was the illogical solution?

Okay, but I don't actually endorse it. Someone told me to put some lemon juice into my diet coke and drink it daily. Lemon juice is acidic. I threw acid into my stomach acid to control my acid. Shockingly, while doing this, my GERD went away. I cannot fathom that the two were connected, yet I am not much for coincidences either.

I think it was because you were preconditioned that it would help. Like I learned in school "there's no better drug than a placebo" even if it is lemon juice and a carbonated beverage. (Or maybe you scared your tummy straight)

Why did you stop the "purple pill"?

I tend to become a very irritable and just not nice to be around, if I don't calm myself down, then I will usualy melt down violently. But if I can remove myself or isolate from that situation to where I can partialy or totally shutdown for a while and recover my composure. Stuff tends to become airborne when I melt down. Its definatly not pretty and since my dx, I have been able to avoid melting down. mike

I shuffle my feet and wiggle my toes, bite the skin of my bottom lip (I do this all the time anyway, but it gets much worse when I'm stressed), pick at my nails, get stomach cramps, get irritable and will cry very easily (which is very embarrassing and makes the stress worse *sigh*). If the stress is bad for more than a few days my immune system will bale out and I'll get lots of annoying minor ailments

For coping techniques: breathing slowly in through my nose and out through my mouth, meditating whilst waiting to fall asleep, and trying to control my thought process from "bad anxious thoughts" to "happy confident thoughts" (this one has never really worked but my psychologist was always telling me I needed to practise it more.. so maybe it would if I wasn't so lazy)

My statistics class starts today. I can tell when I'm getting stressed because I start doing some "things" that I don't usually do. When I'm stressed I start shopping - ALOT (especially on QVC and Amazon). I bite my lower lip, I twirl my hair, and I can't sleep. I also have a very short fuse and can cry at the drop of a hat.

What "things" do you find that you do when stressed? And can you stop them?
I definitely gotcha on the shopping (especially Amazon), the not being able to sleep. I bite the inside of my cheek for some reason. And my emotions are just all over the place when I'm stressed. One moment I'm pissed the hell off and the next I'm a ball of freakin tears. I also over eat here and there but not as much as I used to back when I was like 30lbs heavier. Those were the emotional eating days for sure. Now it's more like ok I just had one cheeseburger too many. Not, ok I just had a pint of ice cream, 3 cans of soda and 2 plates worth of food too many, I should save something for dinner. Lol

Yeah I do the lip thing regularly and it becomes a little worse when I'm stressed. And there have been many times when I've gotten so stressed that I became physically ill. That actually didn't start happening til several years back when I was still living with my mother and she used to always put me down to the point where I'd get really sick and nauseous. Since then it happens at times when I'm stressed even without my mother being around. :(

Hey, I started a statistics class too! Then again, it's on a Thursday so we can't be in the same class. What I do is try to study the material in spare time like when someone else is driving the car. It's done great for me!

Will that work if I'm the one driving? (kidding) I also get car sick so I'd probably end up puking on my statistics book (which is probably how I really feel about the subject anyway.)

I react differently based on what caused the stress. I generally don't stress over long term situations such as new class. I imagine the worst outcome and start eliminating damage. I don't see that as negativism at all, more as a pragmatic approach to a situation that might go bad. If I'm prepared, it doesn't stress me.

When stressed at work, or if I end up in a situation that needs immediate resolving, I enter some kind of a super focused mode, I can become very short, but usually I'm also very efficient. If the load of stress is too large, I might have a break down once the situation is over, on a few occasions I've started crying afterwards, I guess as a way of getting out all the pressure.

The worst for me is stress that evokes emotional reactions. I will become irrational, irritable, and I overdo everything. I generally can't focus and will have hard time sleeping. Sometimes my stomach gets upset and hurts and I'll have hard time eating. I'm very stressed over my boyfriend meeting my family for the first time right now, I can tell just by the way I packed the suitcase and filled it with items I know I won't wear, like three cocktail dresses in case the one I decided to wear for the opera wouldn't work. Or four pairs of shoes. There is no logic in it and I usually pack rather well, since I travel a lot. I guess it's still about eliminating risks, but somehow it gets out of hand instead. Drinking a glass of wine usually helps me relax.

I start to "Shut Down", and no I cannot stop this. Also, my hands shake. If it is long term, I also start to break out on my face and I become irritable. I do not deal with stress well at all.
I'm the same way, first I'll start to shut down, becoming quiet and irritable. At that point I try to remove myself from the situation. But if I cant... it kinda bubbles up and just explodes everwhere.

To work as a placebo, though, wouldn't I have to believe it was a real remedy? I tried it, but I never actually believed it would work. Regardless, my GERD stopped completely long after I stopped drinking that cocktail. Could a placebo completely cure an actual condition if you didn't believe in it?

I'm so pissed off! Not to be graphic, but today is only the third day of class and I can't get out if the damn bathroom! My IBS is getting really bad. At least I'm not having pain.
