What does this controller button do?

It turns out you can indeed use your controller over USB! Try plugging it in to your Mac with the cable you use to charge it and see if that helps! :)

It can be all very frustrating @grommet. I was fixing some issues with our internet the other day and it eventually overwhelmed me. So I know how upsetting it can be when you just want to relax and enjoy your technology rather than trouble shooting it.

I'm sure you will figure it out. I'm not sure but it may be possible to use your controller via a USB cable. I will see if I can find anything out about this. If it will work over USB you should be able to use your wireless headphones and not have any issues with them interrupting the connection to your controller.

It is all broken again. Both joysticks sticking now. They worked now they don't. I did everything. I restarted the MacBook Pro. I was not using the AirPods. I even went to another room to try and get away from other bluetooth signals but it is worse now. It was bad, got worse, was fixed now worse again. Emotional part of brain taken over, cannot think now. I did not break my controller but I do not know how to fix this. I cannot afford to buy another now and this one was new so I do not think that would solve the problem.

I think you are right, something about a signal. I do not feel well. Will try again tomorrow. I do not know if I will have to give up. I hope not. I worked really hard to game.

Working perfect now, no problems. Do you think the problem is over? I want to game so much. I have been learning slowly for two years. I did not know how. I watched videos and I bought this controller but the buttons did not make sense so I have had to learn a lot and now I think I am ready. I bought Lies of P, it is very expensive.

If I must play connected I will do that. I wonder if I can get a longer cable of the type that is connecting it now.

I think you fixed everything 🙂

Well done @grommet :-) I'm super glad we've managed to find a solution at the very least! :-) If you are happy to use your controller via USB then that should be fine :-) If you want to game from farther away, like maybe you connect your Mac to a TV you can get longer USB cables, you would need to invest in a good quality one but it's doable :-)

Now it's working I hope you can sit back and have some fun playing your game! :-)

Good luck! :) I hope it works! If not then maybe try to take a break from it for a while and pick it up again tomorrow :)

Like Bluetooth, our brains only have a certain amount of bandwidth too :)

Can you please tell me a quality Long Micro USB to USB-A cable to get on Amazon. They have many but I want something really good, flexible and strong. I will pay more for a good one. I want to game.

I've had a look. The issue is that it's hard to know how good a cable will perform until you try it. Manufacturers make big claims, however I did find one that looks good at least and you can always return it if it's unreliable.

It's a 3 meter long cable but there's an option for 4 meters and even longer. USB will only reliably work up to a certain distance so you are best off choosing the minimum cable length that will be suitable. So if you only need the cable to travel 3 meters it's best to go for that option. Remember to factor in a bit of slack in the cable so the cable isn't stretched out taught.

So anyways, this looks like a good one...

Txtcu Micro USB Cable 3m, Long Micro Charger Cable Android Charging Cable Braided PS4 Controller Charge Cable Compatible for Samsung Galaxy S7/S5/J3/J5/J7,Huawei,HTC,LG,PS4,Kindle,Xbox,Nexus,Nokia https://amzn.eu/d/08IlVvKP

I'm in the UK so you might have to track it down on Amazon US :-)

Another option would be to get a good quality USB extender cable. I can actually try this myself with my controller and Mac to see how well it works but unfortunately it's too late at night for me to do it now but I will have a try tomorrow and let you know :-)

Sorry. The problem is back. I had it connected with a cable. I even turned off Bluetooth and the joystick problem is back. Cable did not solve it.

Do you have Steam installed on your MacBook?
I do. I installed it yesterday or the day before but I bought Lies of P on the App Store because it was on sale for $41.99. I am also playing Resident Evil 4. RE played fine. This joystick problem suddenly came up. I do not want to give up on gaming but I feel like there is no further solution. I will try thinking about it again tomorrow. Thank you 🙂

MacBook Pro M3.
I'm wondering if that might be a factor. Maybe there's some issue with Apple Silicone Macs. I did read something on Reddit where someone was having an issue with their M1 Mac. They said they'd fixed it, but then didn't explain how they did it, much to other people's disappointment :(

Ah ok! That might be it! I read that you may have to turn off "Steam Controller Input" or something like that! I will check and see what the advice is! :-)

Ok, it's called "Steam Input For Controllers". I found a guide that takes you through how to do it (it's for a specific game but it should be the same for others). You could also try completely closing Steam if you are running a none Steam game as apparently having Steam running can cause the issue you are having.

Anyway, check this out and give it a try and see if it works...

Probably best to take a break from it though and come back to it fresh tomorrow. You'll get it figured out I'm sure! :-)

Hello 🙂

My controller is working enough for me to play. Sometimes the character keeps walking or running but I have been learning to play my games.

I am doing better in Resident Evil 4. The first boss keeps killing me but I do better each time. A friend told me the way to get past bosses is to get a little further each time so I do not know how long it will take but I am making good progress. Today I learned how to reload my gun. I kept running out in fights with zombies which, are really scary. I think they did a very good job with this game.

Lies of P. It looks so good. I have been scared about how much I paid for it, it is a lot of money I could use for food instead but the game is so good looking I want to keep it. I love just looking around. It is very complicated controller use though wow. On button has me swing the sword up from the right, another down from the left. One is for crouching, I guess to avoid being hit, another button lets me use a guard. I keep losing so much health that by the time I reach the first small boss I die fast. Other people in videos shake their left arm and restore their health. I can make the movement but I am missing something that lets you give yourself health.

I want to keep the game because it looks so good and I think it will be a fun challenge learning how to use the controller. It feels good when I become more fluid and can go from button to button quickly, more natural. Some people must be great at it. I bet they don't think at all.

Resident Evil 4 is free up to a point. I have not reached that point yet. It will be expensive to buy. I am not sure if I will. It is also a very good looking game and I am learning the controls in it more easily than Lies of P.

One thing that helped me most was reversing the Y axis on the camera. To me the joystick is my head and I could not make sense of push forward on the stick but suddenly looking up. Now it makes sense. In Resident Evil 4 I can adjust the camera movement speed. That is helping. I wonder if I can do that in Lies of P.

I wanted to tell you how I was going. Thank you so much for your help.
