What pets do you have? Why? How did you choose them?

Mia - Your black & white cat looks exactly like a cat my wife has. Our kitty has diabetes and requires 5 units of insulin twice a day.

Charlie was also diabetic and received two shots of insulin per day. Think he may have been diabetic from birth, but it wasn't identified until he was about ten years old. Afterward he had insulin injections for nine years. He also had pica, where he ate things that were not food, like paper, erasers, and rubber. Wonder how common diabetes might be in tuxedo cats?

I have a golden retriever and a Maltese-shitzu mix.

Hi Kirsty, My dogs are pure breed Doberman Pinschers. We didn't have their ears cropped because it is so much trouble and painful for the animal. The one on the left is Lakota. He is currently ten years of age. The one on the right was Luke. He died back in 2017. His obituary tribute is on my youtube channel at Strachan Photography.

Thanks for sharing your lovely video full of wonderful memories. I can only imagine how it’s the saddest thing ever to lose one of your best friends. It’s hard enough for me watching them pass away on TV/YouTube. Never mind in real life! I’d be inconsolable. R.I.P little one. <3

Nice thread, and I dont mind it being a bit old. :)

Anyway, I have 3 cats and a dog with my wife. We used to have 4 cats but had to give one adopted to new family as she didnt get along with other cats. Now she is having the time of her life. So it turned out better.

I have always loved animals, all kinds. When I was a kid my best friends were animals: dogs mainly. I actually think that I like more about animals than most people. -.-

You're my kind of girl. (am I allowed to say that?) :D
I'm stuck in "pets prohibited" rented properties, which is all rented properties in the UK these days, so I'm limited to plants which is sooo lame. I still get to care for another life in a way, I just don't care about them so it doesn't come close to pet ownership. :(
I would volunteer at a local shelter but my local one is where I used to work so.. that would be awkward lol.

Get a Venus fly trap plant or some pitcher plants. They're carnivores and you can feed them flies and bugs!

We have ten cats, six dogs, five guinea pigs, two birds and a little over thirty chickens. We live in a very remote area surrounded by hundreds of acres on two sides. Thoughtless people tend to dump off their unwanted cats near our house and the strays end up invariably coming to us.

The first cat we ever acquired was found in the chicken coup eating chicken food. She was mangy and starving. We cared for her for the remainder of her life. She made an extremely nice pet. Pictured below is one of our cats (Jill) and one of our dogs (Lakota - on the left).

We live out in a rural area, too, and have taken in strays that people throw out. I currently have 3 horses, 3 donkeys, a large old white German Sheppard that was a stray, 2 cats that were strays, and about 8 chickens because I like fresh eggs. We don't want to get any more pets until we are too old to travel because it is hard to find someone I trust to take care of our animals when we're gone.

My tuxedo cat is very fat but the vet has never said that she is diabetic. She had her annual checkup and vaccinations last week and all is well. Her name is Domino and she wakes me up virtually every morning by pawing my eyes and sitting on my chest. Or on my head if I cover my face with blankets so she can't scratch my eyes.

a couple of weeks ago i got three female dumbo rats, they're called uno, ett and ori. ett is pretty much completely tamed and likes to interact but the other two are still a bit shy and jumpy. they're fun to play with, cool little creatures.

I am butler and cook for a labrador and a rat terrier. My rattie is my baby....I look at him and my wallet just spends itself.

I currently have 2 rescue cat ladies named Elie (Siamese mix cat) and Valeriane (long haired Calico x Tabby). I also used to have a diluted Calico baby named Nur who was the love of my life but died almost 3 years ago. My daughter and I also have a lot of fish, shrimp and aquatic snails and we plan to add some terrestrial Isopod colonies to our ever growing indoor jungle next Summer and maybe a couple New Caledonian geckos and snakes if we can find a way to have them shipped to our remote location. Oh and she has a pet spider and a couple other insects.
