What song are you listening to right now?

When I was being groomed for a career in performance, this piece was taught almost as a purely academic exercise, which really pissed me off. There's so much potential in it, and yet every teacher I ever had wanted to dissect it, to say "This is the way you do this, this is the way you do that," and taking any risks whatsoever was mostly discouraged. Which is why I love this performance so much...pretty much the only non-boring version of the piece i've ever heard.

I give you, Mozart's Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra, as performed by Nicholas Daniel at the BBC Proms:

Been going through the Beatles catalogue of monaural mixes. I remember, back when they were first released (my goodness is it really six years ago now?!) you could get a boxed set of the stereo recordings, or a boxed set of the mono recordings. Which made no sense to me, because you can still get the stereo albums individually. If you're going to spring for a boxed set, then for goodness sake, go for the mono! And get whatever album you want in stereo individually.

Anyway, there's your musical rant for the day.
