What was the last movie you watched?

I saw The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug yesterday with my friend. I liked much better than An Unexpected Journey. I loved the CGI on the dragon & it's voice actor. There needs to be more dragon movies. The three hours flew by.

FROZEN

I'm honestly not sure how I feel about this one. I definitely enjoyed it and I think it's great that they went out on a limb and tried something that's very different from the usual Disney fairy tale, but at the same time, it's nowhere near as good as the hype makes it out to be and as a followup to the phenomenally good Wreck It Ralph, it really doesn't measure up. That said, this is probably one of those films I'll enjoy more on repeat viewings, so my opinion on it might change after I see it a couple more times.

Porco Rosso.

I haven't seen it in ages, but it's still freaking wonderful.

I saw that ages ago back when TCM had a Ghibli marathon. But I haven't seen it since, and I think we all know that you can't watch a Ghibli film just once.

I felt that the story was weak. (which is bad because what they were aiming for was really sweet.) But there was no villain until the end, and just when some real conflict had started, the movie ended.
However, the visual aspects of the movie were amazing.

Agreed. I also really liked the music, especially Cristophe Beck's score. However, Olaf's song, as well as the Trolls' song, seemed very out of place and easily could have been tossed out without harming the story one bit. Olaf in general seemed like a completely unnecessary character who was only there so they had something to merchandise. Definitely not one of Disney's best. As a side note, I just watched the Russian film from 2012 for the sake of comparison and I actually think they did a better job. It's not nearly as ambitious as Frozen, of course, but in this case, less truly is more.

The last new movie I saw was The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug. Better than the first one but still not what I'd say was good.

The last film I watched was The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Pretty good.

Thumbelina

I hadn't seen this film in many years, but remembered thinking it was one of Don Bluth's least enjoyable works. Imagine my surprise, then, when it turned out to be much, MUCH better than I remembered it. It's kind of a strange film, but to be fair, so was the original story so you can't fault Bluth for being faithful to it. The animation is gorgeous and the music by Barry Manilow is fantastic. I recommend it.

The Phantom Tollbooth

The novel has always been one of my all time favorites and when I saw the film as a teenager, I hated it. I decided to take another look to see if it was as bad as I remembered and...yes and no. The first part of the film is terrible and not in a so-bad-it's-good way. However, once they get to Dictionopolis, the film improves so it's at least tolerable. I feel that this adaptation has the same problem as Disney's animated Alice In Wonderland in that certain individual scenes are very well done, but the production as a whole is a complete and total mess. I remember thinking I could make a better adaptation if given the chance and, well, I still think that. If you're going to subject yourself to this one, watch it for the animation and try to ignore the weak writing.

The Princess And The Goblin

I remember seeing commercials for this one as a kid, but never saw it until now. It's different, but I liked it. An adaptation of a children's novel from 1872, it seems tonally similar to Disney's The Black Cauldron and the thought occurred to me that it's as if the filmmakers saw that film, thought they could do better, and made this film to prove it. While the animation isn't as fluid or detailed as a Disney film would be, the film's real strength is its story which is very well told. The voice acting is also very good and what little music there is suits the film perfectly. I would call this a hidden gem that's worth tracking down if you can find it.

Arashi, how do the Smurf movies compare to the recent Alvin And The Chipmunks? I saw the first one of that series and thought it was average, not great but not terrible either. Is The Smurfs better or worse?

I really liked the smurfs movies but then again I think Neil Patrick Harris is an amazing actor who did an amazing job so I think it helped because he was convincing in terms of seeing the smurfs. I loved Vexy....I thought that the animation was actually really well done. Considering they are blue little blobs.

Also I just watched the movie Mozart and the whale again. I love that movie.

Last night I watched two, The Elmchanted Forest and Rainbow Brite And The Star Stealer. Both were films I loved as a kid and surprisingly, they still hold up. Definitely lighter fare than most animated films, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Watched the new Carrie tonight. Wasn't that impressed, even though it has my favourite, Chloe Grace Moretz. Charlotte is watching Practical Magic which I am not paying any attention to haha
