What's your favorite bird?

JuniperBug

Rainbow Bird of Friendliness
I'm going to shamelessly plug my own obsession here and ask for your opinions on the world's most beautiful and interesting birds.

What bird really captures your interest and why? Is it particularly cute or striking or intelligent? Post a picture if you'd like!

As for me, I am very fond of the American Robin. I've seen a lot of them growing up and their symbolize perseverance and strength.

And, of course, parrotlets (just like my own pet). They are tiny, spunky, smart, and oh so very fluffy and adorable! SQUEEE!!!

I'm consistently fond of hawks and hummingbirds. The Northern Harrier has been sighted in friendly aerial ballets with Great Gray owls in the midwest US--an unusual example of how partners competing for the same food coexist in a 12-hour "niche switch" because they hunt at different times. That they will expend calories this way--despite the very narrow energy budget predatory birds have--that's something.

For sake of being an insiderjoke I probably should say "a magpie"

But I suppose I have a bit of a thing for ravens and crows

I must confess that I think ostriches are hilarious though and the notion that a group of flamingos is called a flamboyance is pretty funny as well.

The crow video I filmed last yera

Green-cheeked conure! Well, that is one I want to get, anyway. Cute AND intelligent. Maybe someday if I work from home, an African Grey. :)

Oh, this thread reminds me of a bird of my own creation (and a bit of help from photoshop)

Superheron.jpg
The superheron

(yes, that's an awful joke but I take full responsibility)

Hmm, does it have to be a real bird? The phoenix, because it's in a continual cycle of death and rebirth, and always rises again from it's own ashes. It symbolises a new beginning, and hope.

I like the house sparrow. The males look like they have a goatie-beard with a smattering of chest-hair

The females have a stripe that run above their eye to the back of their heads. It's subtle but I really like the marking.

I like the Superb Fairy Wren, in part due to it's name.

The male looks like someone was half way through painting him and then stopped, leaving his bottom half unfinished.

The female Supeperb Fairy Wren look like she has a red super-hero mask across her eyes and beak. The male and female look very different from one another, which I find really interesting.

Nothing will raise the hairs on the back of my neck (in a good way) quite like the crepuscular call of the Eastern Whippoorwill.

Raptors are my favourite. It would be easier to answer this if you'd asked what my favourite birds are in various categories. In North America, the redtailed hawk wins hand down. I love the bird life in Australia, from the parrots to the passerines to the raptors. The kookaburra may be my favourite bird here, because no matter how down I feel, hearing their call always makes me smile.

Great topic for discussion.... I'm partial to raptors. But I love all birds, so when I read other's posts and see the beautiful pictures find myself yeah, that one, no, that one, and now have fallen for JuniperBug's parrot, which I already said, previously. :). The picture is of a sweet robin on my usual path by the river walk; taken last summer.

Here's lookin' at you, kid!

Hard question. I just like birds. One of the few vinyl records I have is of bird calls. Got the CD too now :-)
I like the happy flitting and friendly chirps of fantails. I like the call of bellbirds and grey warblers. Always liked harriers. And of course, I have to mention the cheeky kea!
For SE Asian birds, to me the call of the koel symbolizes tropical Asia, and is my current 'email arrived' tone.
I never had a love for crows, but as I came home one evening at dusk and saw them feeding on the rising cloud of mosquitoes my respect for them went up a notch. They say there is no malaria if there are crows.
