Who turns off their computer?

Nitro, I love supercaps too.

Mouser.com sells supercaps at 2.5KF @ 2.7 V. No, it's not a typo. They really are 27,000 Farads a piece. :)

<EvilGenius> I wonder what I could do with those !! :p </EvilGenius>

I swear I am one lab accident away from becoming a supervillain. Bazinga ! :D:cool:
27k farads is off the hook :D

especially if you bank them in parallel. Only problem is they are bigger than a beer can and very likely quite heavy.

You could build a super cool magnetic flux can crusher. That would make recycling a whole lot easier although your electricity bill would go through the roof.

The bump and thump car audio guys are using the single farad caps to smooth higher surges required to make mean sub sound.

I can buy five volters from electronic suppliers for pretty cheap. My lawnmower starts on a bank of four at half capacity and ten volts.

I have never heard of a counter in a computer, but that doesn't mean they can't exist. I think that many of the failures are due to break downs in electrolytic capacitors. The have a finite life and often when I had problems with a CNC machine,a temporary fix was implemented with a common hair dryer to heat the caps to bring a machine back online. I was taught that method by a technician when he did it in front of me. After the bad capacitors were identified,a parts change was in order.
I agree that it's only an on/off count that would cause the end of a computer's useful life. nvidia, with their fantastic overheating (sarcasm here) reputation make graphics chips that can sometimes be fixed using a similar (and unexpected) technique. If you have a suitable candidate, heat up the chip A LOT, and hey presto, it works again. [emoji1]

I built a pneumatic magazine fed can crusher once that flattened a can to less that one eighth inch thick in an instant. It crushed the cans so fast it required a vent added to it to relieve the air when in operation. The tab was usually pushed back into place when it was finished like it had never been opened :p

I wouldn't know where to find the exact caps with the right farad / voltage, but I know that in this part of the world it's ofteen cheaper to buy components when they're already in something, take it apart and there you have it. So often you get a few more "freebies" for less money than if you bought the component how most people would.... Along with a load of crap.

I think they know that :D

I have a rechargeable can cooler in the design works now that will use a peltier device as the cooler. My problem with it now is getting rid of the heat they produce on the other side of the chip fast enough.

you should see my PC junkyard :D

If something lasts forever they will never get to sell one again...it is pure economics at work

Me and my partner had one of those.Til we were forced to leave our home and all possessions in a hurry to go far far away.
I like PC junkyards. They are very helpful to have, and in my opinion better to look at than something like a neatly manicured lawn.

Yeh, I know a lot of companies do that dirty little trick. I think nvidia's way of going about it though has kind of done them a disservice. I would never buy anything with nvidia. Its too much hassle.

I have tons of new in box obsolete computer parts too.
I must have 50 or so new motherboards still in the boxes

no,they plan on them failing
I was surprised because I thought you meant something I didn't know about, like nvidia aren't trying to have people over. Wouldn't ever happen. They make too much money being crap.

I have a maxwell's demon that is pretty cool to play with. You push compressed air into the side of it and it makes a 30 degree F temperature differential at the opposite ends of the tube
