Windows XP installation question

I have a truckload of older computers and just enough knowledge to be dangerous. My present plan is to use one for my entertainment system, one to run an expensive HP photo printer that is not supported past XP with full functionality and possibly more for MACH 3 CNC machine drives. I have no reason to ever put them online and will load them from external drives. I fully understand that Microsoft has dropped support for this operating system and have an unopened copy of XP to play with. Does it require contacting Microsoft to do an install,or will the resident install be able to run on multiple machines outside of their licensing requirements for an outdated OS? I have searched for an answer on and off for about three days and only gained an ISO file of XP to do an install on top of a newer OS.
I really don't want to buy multiple licensed copies of windows just to use outdated crap for toys and to use a new printer that is otherwise useless unless used on XP

I have new in package reinstall discs for several operating systems and a bunch of licensing keys to choose from to punch into hem but wondered if they had to phone home to use them as well.
Can any here answer my questions?

To my knowledge you have to connect to Microsoft to indefinitely activate the installed OS, even though technically formal support for this OS has expired. Otherwise in 29 days or so your access to a recent installation will expire.

If you don't have Service Pack 3 for XP you may still be able to obtain it from Microsoft.

"ZDNet also reports that if, for some reason, you want to install Windows XP on your PC after April 8th, Microsoft will still require that the OS be activated before it can run on your computer."

Microsoft: You will still need to activate Windows XP after April 8th with a fresh install - Neowin

Interesting
what are your thoughts on using my ISO on an emulator offline? I do have product keys to use XP if that is all that is required. I never started a computer that was never online in the past...if a 29 day reinstall cycle was the only thing stopping me on the entertainment box or the printer box it would not be a big deal,it is the machine code software that would be my biggest headache for playing with CNC...my version of that software is not supported beyond XP as well,so a newer box and the emulater only adds cost to my playtime and leaves the system vulnerable...
I'm not out to pirate anything, only using up obsolete hardware

Couldn't personally comment on that as I've never run emulators. Perhaps someone else can answer that. My XP system has removable hard drives drives and I use Windows 98SE as an offline gaming platform for legacy software from the 90's to early 2000's.

The thing is, once you get a full correct install of Windows XP and the appropriate service packs, there's no reason to keep it online having to run a variety of security programs that use up resident memory. I only keep mine online because I can connect wirelessly to an inkjet printer with graphics programs I can't run on a 64-bit platform. And I make a point never to use that system to surf the web.

Sounds like I should just try it to see what happens and go from there.
I could use the sealed copy for the machine code OS and run multiple drives for each machine for the MACH 3 software. Maybe Windows can run separate machine code from partitions. I can install multiple copies of MACH 3 and may want to run several machines at the same time. I'm all about the production gig :p

Legacy in it's finest hour.
My fabulous Maxtor 170 MB hard drive out of a Windows 3.1 system :p
It must weigh five pounds :D
I have a lot of silly computer components and wish I still had the rig it came from

I remember when 30 MB was plenty of hard disk space pertaining to Windows 3.1 and DOS 5.0. :p

I'm still trying to decide if I want a 64 or 128 gb micro sd for my phone :p

I'm holding out for a phone that can walk the dog and do my income taxes. Of course I don't have a dog at the moment...:D
If I get a box to run machine code,I can print you a dog that won't eat or poop:p

Would an Windows XP install ISO run from a burnable CD disc ? If Microsoft requires you to register it after April 18th, maybe there's an ISO that's available before Microsoft hard coded some time trial code into their OS.

I wonder if you could save the page from the site where you register your OS and run it through Apache, then maybe take your old computer that your installing it on and connect it to the Apache server to trick the OS into being registered ?

I got the idea from a YouTube video on malware analysis, where the person added a domain to his Ubuntu machine and allowed the malware to connect to it to see what it intended to do in the wild.

Sounds like the Apache server deal might be something to investigate
If you could pm me a link to the youtuber I will take a look, and if not I will search for it

Is Microsoft asking to identify the bios or the resident drive as a verification?

I hate windows :p

I don't remember those days in that amount of detail, but I've seen the gems since. I was dismantling an ancient PC once (part of my job at the time) and it had a very speedy 10MHz processor!! It was interesting takinf apart the older ones to see how far the technology has come.

It depends on how "by the book" you want to do things....
I have a suggestion, but I will not say unless I can be sure it won't offend/upset/alarm you, because I know some people who would be.

I am an MCSE. "Will it require me contacting them"... No... "Will it run outside their licensing".. Yes. Not technically, legally, but it will work fine.. But why use xp and not 7? There is no need to do that, it will run fine with 7.. "not supported past xp" does not mean that 7 cannot run it, natively, for one. And two, it would be able to use compatibility mode. Nothing to worry about

This is not accurate

some of my software and hardware is not supported past XP

will a 7 emulator run my printer as it was intended for XP?
